is the best manufacturer of braking equipment in the world!!! If you think brakes, think Brembo
! Even better, think Brembo
and then think OPP
Whew, had to get that out of my system. But it's true, when it comes to upgrading your brake system from the stock components, the best choice is Brembo
(and OPP Racing!). If you don't believe me, take a look at what is used in MotoGP or World Superbike. Taking a look at a Formula 1 or World Rally Championship car. When it comes to winning championships and getting the best performance, the only choice is Brembo (and www.oppracing.com
Of course, it's unreasonable for you to blindly accept my endorsement. What makes Brembo
the best choice? How will it help you and how will it improve your sportbike? The purpose of this article is educate you about Brembo's new High Performance division and to teach you about the components that you can use to make your bike perform better. At OPP
, we make it a priority to educate our customers rather than taking advantage of their lack of knowledge about a product to sell stuff. As an official Brembo
distributor, our team gets to communicate with Brembo
technical staff and I have even had the opportunity to visit their main factory in Italy. I hope you find this article informative and entertaining.
Brembo History: Life prior to Brembo High Performance
In the past, Brembo's motorcycle division was divided into two divisions: OEM / Production and Brembo Racing.
Brembo OEM / Production
: This division manufactures Brembo components that can be found as OEM components on bikes. Examples include the master cylinders, calipers and rotors that you would find on most Italian sportbikes (ex. Ducati 1098) and the occasional Japanese sportbike (ex. Yamaha R1 or R6) and special edition sportbikes (ex. 2006 Yamaha R1 LE). These parts are designed for OEM and are not developed with aftermarket applications in mind. Part quality is good but they are built to cost so that the sportbike you buy off the floor is affordable.
: This division develops cutting-edge braking technology and provides the parts for elite racing series such as MotoGP and World Superbike. Billet monoblock calipers and carbon-carbon brake rotors are examples of products that are developed by this division. Top performance, regardless of cost. At this point, I need to clear up some misconceptions:
- Brembo RACING products are NOT ALWAYS SIMPLE BOLT-ON PRODUCTS. While there are instances where Brembo Racing parts will fit on a production sportbike, you cannot expect every racing component to fit without problems. Nor are the parts suitable for street use. Brembo makes the part, YOU adapt to it.
- Brembo RACING products are NOT ALWAYS AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. We get a lot of inquiries from customers who see brake components in MotoGP and World Superbike and want to buy it. Sometimes, you simply can't get it even if you had a bathtub full of cash. Heck, there are some components that the race teams have to GIVE BACK at the end of the season. For example, those nickel-cadmium monobloc calipers go back to Brembo at the end of the season. (STAY TUNED! OPP will be receiving the first NICKEL-CADMIUM Brembo HP calipers! Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or follow the link to pre-order!)There are also cases where racing components are made in limited runs. For example, Brembo will survey race teams to determine who wants Brembo brake rotors. Brembo figures out the demand, calculates the cost and signs contracts to make the rotors for the teams. Once it's done, that's it, no more rotors.
- Brembo RACING products are EXPENSIVE. It's the law of diminishing returns - as you approach maximum performance levels, the marginal costs (incremental costs) for reaching that level begin to increase. Brembo Racing doesn't make compromises, it's only the best technology but the price is steep.
realized that there was a big gap between the two divisions in terms of performance and cost. As a racing privateer, track day enthusiast or average street rider, you had to choose between OEM / Production parts that were not much of an upgrade over stock or you had to jump up to Brembo Racing parts which were expensive, provided more performance than what was really needed, hard to get and somewhat difficult to install. So a few years ago, Brembo
created a new division to address those concerns: Brembo High Performance
Brembo High Performance: The Best of All Worlds
Brembo High Performance (HP)
was created to develop brake components that would be top quality, affordable, easy to install and available to the general public. How do they accomplish this?[LIST][*]Top Quality
: Brembo HP has an in-house engineer that works closely with a team of six Brembo Racing engineers to bring racing technology to the street. The engineer also considers the needs and desires of the average street rider to create components that do it all.[*]Affordable
: Brembo HP pioneers new production methods that make parts more and more affordable. For example, the M4 Cast Monoblock Caliper was first unveiled as an OEM component on the Ducati 1098. If you read reviews about the Ducati 1098, the words "phenomenal braking" usually appeared. A pair of monoblock calipers for less than $1000 USD? Impossible...until Brembo HP was created.[*]Easy to Install
: Brembo HP recognized that it is not reasonable to expect the average street rider to design and build their own spacers and brackets to use Brembo products. The Brembo HP division developed specific application kits for Italian manufacturers such as Ducati, MV Agusta, Aprilia, Bimota, Benelli, Moto Guzzi and KTM as well as non-Italian manufacturers such as Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha and Triumph. These kits are designed as direct replacements for stock parts - no extra parts are required.
