I'm tripping balls...EDIT: more newb questions inside
Okay so just got a motor swap on my 03 600rr, old motor exploded on the highway...The mechanics did a good job. This new motor sounds sweet and runs great.
i may have ran it for 50-70 miles, today I put my bike on rear stand to get it level. let it cool for several minutes. I notice my oil level is at the bottom line in the sight glass :crying:
I guess the new motor ate a bit of oil. I probably should have checked it earlier. How much did I screw my motor up? Will my new motor be ok?? :retard:
The oil level should be checked with the bike held upright and not on any stand. When on a track stand it usually reads low - at the very bottom of the window or not at all (may vary depending on stand).
The OE method is to run the bike until hot and then shut it off and let it sit for 3 minutes. With the bike held level (not on either stand) look at the window and it is supposed to be at the top line.
When on a rear stand or side stand the level will be dramatically different and will not be accurate.....
Thank you sir, I took the bike off the stand and tipped it until just starting to tip over then pushed back til it was right level. And I was still maybe just barely above bottom line. I then warmed her up and let cool for a few minutes and tried the same thing, pulling her up until she was just about to tip and I still got just at the bottom line.
So I'm going to grab some 10w40 which is what the shop used. I guess I will just get some Mobil 1 or something and top it off. Not sure exactly what type they used but do you think a little mix would hurt it? Like a few extra ounces?
So you don't think a little bit running the oil at the lower line would do much bad to the motor?
The bottem line of the oil level sight glass is a perfectly acceptable level. You could do a trackday at 15,000rpm all day with that level and still be fine. Enjoy the bike.
