Tripage engine tear down

Tore the engine down today. Looking for a Florida shop to check the head to see if it is still in spec to be honed. Have some wall etching if I can go with stock piston swap I will, if not guess I will have to bore it over 1mm,2mm we will see. Will update with new info etc. Have not seen a thread like this or much info on the engine ect. Had white smoke on decel, compression test showed rings were bad on 1 and 3 further tear down to show the walls. T

I've been considering going to 2mm oversize on mine over winter but waiting for my brother to make some more enquiries as to if it's worth it etc.

Obviously it's a different situation with yours as those bores have definitely seen better days - the bores can show scuffing marks almost from new but it's the first time I've seen on here that it's got that bad the engine starts smoking etc

No idea where they're based but even though I'm in the UK my brother sends busa blocks etc to the states to get them bored/replated - Millenium Coating or somewhere like that I think.

From reading on other forums looks like this is normal with honda engines. All walls look like the picture. Wear is only on the front and back of the piston. 1 and 3 are a slight bit worse then 2 and 4. Dad is a master mechanic and has never seen wear like this. Almost like the walls are not straight and the head can pivot a little. Also have heard that just rebuild it again and they will be fine. Would love to bore out but $600 for pistons plus the bore and plating will not be cheap. Not sure I want to spend that kind of money.

There is a shop here (gainesville) that does boring and engine building. Really nice guy and he knows his stuff. Its bit of a drive for you, but its on your way to Jennings.

just as you said, its normal for their to be wear on the front and the back of the cylinder walls. Every motor we have had apart have shown scuffs like in your pictures. However, its now a prime reason to do a 2mm overbore and have the entire motor race prepped and balanced even better.

I would guess 03-04 is the same 05-06 is the same. If your 03 isn't fitting then 05-06 should fit.

What are you doing to them to fix this? Honing it re ring it and your good? Boring it over, Sleeve or plating, does this fix the problem for longer than 10,000 miles? Guess what I am wanting to do is see if boring will fix the problem or is it going to do the same thing, in that case I will hone it and rebuild. T

I think you're a bit beyond new rings and a hone job. Those scuffs are from the skirt on the piston. ( which is bigger at the bottom and smaller at the top) If you honed that bore to only clean up... it would still be oval shaped and the rings would still get blow-by. Stock pistons are like $500 for a set. JE pistons are like $700. Bore and hone are ???

My .02 I would just buy a motor to replace that one.

^^^Yeah I'm sure you can overbore that, I had similar problems with my Civic long time ago. Piston 3 took a sh*t and I had to do a 30mm overbore, but this is a car I don't know what to think with a bike engine.

I'd budgeted 1000 if I went 2mm over with mine, 600 min for pistons and boring/plating then the rest to cover getting the job done and gaskets etc. My motor would need lots of measuring and stuff cos it's already higher compression and the new pistons could raise it furter as well as the effect of increasing swept volume. And cam timing would need checking too.

Did someone really say they went 30mm oversize??? lol

It could've been a DUC and lasted you half that long on the track and been twice as expensive to restore to service.
