I've just bought a 2005 600RR for track use. I want to lower the gearing and wonder what you would suggest? On my previous bike, a 675 Daytona, I dropped one tooth off the front sprocket and this seemed to be OK, so I'm thinking that would be a good start.
Most of the tracks I ride I don't get near to maxing out in top, except maybe for Aragon in Spain where I hit 152mph in top. That's a reliable figure from my GPS lap timer.
You don't get 152mph on the cbr600, at least not on stock gearing. See the attached top speed chart. I use this to figure out my gearing for each track. Generally, I want to gear it as low as possible (-x in the front, +x in the rear) but still tall enough that I hit top speed at the end of the longest straight. For most tracks around me, -1 front, +1 or +2 rear is a good general starting point. But COTA has a huge long back straight, so I'm still trying to figure it out - the closest I've come is full stock, but I want to try stock in the front, -1 in the back.
You misread the chart. The pre loaded chart stops at 13500 rpms. You have to adjust it. Rev limit is around 15000-15500 IIRC. Stock gearing is also 16/43 not 16/42.
Thanks for all the suggestions folks. I think I'll start with just dropping a tooth at the front. Only doing track days so not too bothered about getting it spot on for each different track. If I was still racing............>
