Got some race body work on last year and i just starting thinking about the fuel drain/overflow.
Is it a fire hazard routed in the enclosed belly pan?
In a event of a tip over this seems bad or does it have a check valve or something like that? Im confused and dont want to have to Install a catch can if I dont have to
I thought that the fuel drain hose was routed from the top of the tank, above the cap, to below. It's purpose is to drain whatever gas you might spill over the rim so it doesn't run down places it doesn't belong. In a tip over, as long as the gas cap is sealing, you shouldn't see it spilling. I've had mine sideways a couple of times in a shed and nothing came out anyway. A check valve would pretty much just defeat the purpose of a drain., unless it's installed in an orientation so that nothing gets back UP but I don't see anything of that sort in parts diagrams. Here's a cutaway I found of an '04:
In short it's not really a fire hazard unless you pour liters over.
The vent hose might get something out of it though if it's on the side long enough. Not sure if those are valved.
Honestly im not sure ill go pop the tank open and take a look i understand what your saying about the drain line that makes sense. Still not to sure about the vent is there a device thingy on it that prevents large amounts of gas from spilling out in event of a tip over? anyone know?
I dont think it would take more than a ounce of gas in the right spot to hit the headers an ignite? Idk the vent and drain line are inches from the headers in the belly pan..
think about it, it's at the very top of the tank. if the bike was upside down, the outlet is above the inlet. if the bike is upright, the fuel is below the vent. if the bike is on its side, it MAY drip a couple drops, but probably not because the system is closed (as fuel exits, it can't vent, like the thumb over a straw deal)
i wouldn't worry about it for a second, route the breather and overflow into the belly pan.
