Any idea how soon it would be advised to reserve a room that weekend?
Do it now...the earlier the better! But I suppose it depends on the place you choose to stay at as it concerns with how far out they are willing to let you reserve.

IMO Get the general admission seats. Turn 11 and turn 4 are cool but I like to rome around. i also have the paddock and rev zone passes. But those were a gift!!

Negatives:
Depending on the turn, you may not be able to actually go out and see the vendors. You're actually working the 3 days but they go by quick.

No. No experience is required, with the exception of being a flagger (wave the colored flags as broadcasted on the radio). All of the information is on the website, which should give you an understanding of what it's like. There are 3 positions, flagger, handler and handler w/ radio (you just call things in) crashed bike, bike #, turn, and you get to hear other crashes (anyone can borrow the radio to listen in, they'll announce positions, who's crashed, etc).
The 3 days are work, you do get breaks, just depends on the turn. Some turns more than others. Everyone wants the corkscrew, but you're also furthest from the vendors, etc. You're basically have a front row seat of all the action and you're picking up bikes, and if you go out, you may need to ensure the safety of the medical person or fellow handlers you may need to act as a watcher telling them to get back/out of danger.
Last year I picked up Pedrosa's bike during practice, and Crutchlow's and Bautista's during the race. Crutchlow's & Bautista's were back-to-back, after a full sprint you're exhausted.

I think I want in on this, want are the chances of getting selected. I'm sure there are A LOT of people that want to do this.
Chances are pretty good if you can commit to the full 3 days. Last year was my first and I got selected. As a veteran, you have a better chance of the turn you want the following year (e.g. corkscrew, or another turn).
Last year they had a little over 300 and it wasn't enough. Each turn has 4 subturns. Turn 2 = 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 & 2.4. (Beginning, Start of Turn, Apex, and Exit). They had at least 6 people per turn group so about 24 - 30 people per turn. You have at least 2-4 handlers at each subturn and 2 flaggers and 1 person in charge of all of the turns, like a turn marshall.
They should be giving out information early March, wrapping some stuff up as per the website.
I am going to make the race this year for first time. Any suggestions? Such as where to watch the race at the track, hotel recommendations, or even good places? Thanks!

dam that is what weekend it is, I am gonna be off in the middle of nowhere I have to make this one year since I am in SoCal. maybe next year ride up

ive never been to laguna seca, but i know from sonoma, chicagoland, and daytona that its cool to roam for a while but seats are eventually a must if you want to watch the race. ive experieced many times at races that the best places to watch the action are guarded by a security guard and u cant linger.
What would be best? Grandstand seats with paddock passes, or turn 4/11 with paddock passes?

Turn 4 works best for me since you can see turn 3 and turn 5. Its also the area where they do practice starts at the end of the session. (Lorenzo crash last year). There is also a big screen so you can watch the rest of the race.
tickets came in yesterday. i feel kinda bad, my mom, brother and maybe nephew are driving down. me and my friend are riding down. but they're staying sun night down there and leaving monday to avoid the traffic. just picked up our paddock passes. still debating about RLZ tix.
