I'm joining to ask about a bike i'm considering purchasing.
Its an 03 600RR, with 17,500kms. The original owner decided to do an oil change himself, and didn't know what a sight glass was - and instead filled the oil to the top of the case...
The bike wouldn't start after running for a while (obviously filled the intake with oil)... This owner sold it to the guy who owns it now. He had it cleaned up and it now runs. It has new plugs, and apparently the injectors are still good.
Is there anything that could be damaged at this point? The bike starts right up and idles well now. I will be riding it wednesday.
I paid 3k for my 05 with 15k on it and that was 2 years ago. This is the time that ppl start selling bikes (and around tax time). You may want to hold out. As far as dmg, you could have some seal problems. Overfilling fluids can be just as bad as underfilling sometimes.
i think your best bet is to, as said, either have it checked out professionally or just hold off, we've all been there before, your real anxious...but you gotta think about it like picking a woman to go out with
once you get past the kitchen jokes.....you look at whats out there and......i kinda havent gotten past the kitchen jokes yet lol (song came on lost my train of thought)
but seriously all jokes aside, just wait until its worth it..."the one" is out there for you just gotta wait for her

I called a local shop today, that the seller claims did some work on the bike. They're going to pull the file and fill me in on everything tomorrow.
They also mentioned that the only real damages that could have occurred would have been:
a) Spark plug fouling. This has been taken care of with brand new laser plugs just installed.
b) Hydro lock. Lol, this is a serious concern, but the bike purrs. Hydro lock is violent... If the bike were hydro locked it would sound seriously messed up and/or not even turn over.
The reason i think this bike could be 'the one' for me, is because has been low sided and because of this - cheapofied. I don't mind a little bit of scarring to save some pennies.

My other suggestion is to have another mechanic inspect the bike so you have a 3rd opinion.
Don't get too obsessed with this CBR, although the price is low. Obviously we already know that it was laid down and the first owner did not know how to properly maintain it by adding too much oil. That is a big deal for me anyway. All you really have to do is read the manual to know how much oil to put in -Its not that hard. Who knows what else has been done wrong to this bike?
Just trying to watch out for you man. don't get blinded by the low price, i'm sure another one will come along with the same price. If you are really set on getting this bike, make sure everything has been checked and double-checked so you don't inherit any problems in the future.
Does anyone have any experience with putting a deposit on a bike? I put a $200 deposit on it to hold it for me until tomorrow. I don't want to run into problems trying to get that back from buddy... I do have a receipt for it.

Thanks,

A deposit with proof (your receipt) is a legal binding contract where the seller cannot sell the bike out from under you. If they do you are entitled to take legal actions against the seller. I don't remember all of the details of it from my business law class in college, but it protects you as a buyer. If at anytime for any reason, or no reason at all, you decide to not proceed with the purchase you are able to get your deposit back (kinda like a beer keg!!)

Bike had tranny issues when we went to ride it. I asked for my deposit back and the guy is now denying everything and telling me that I just spent $200 (my deposit) on a test drive.
Any input would be appreciated. I'll be contacting small claims today.
From what I understand... when you put a deposit on something, you enter into a binding contract to purchase and if you back out, you forfeit your deposit. Its up to the seller if he wants to refund.
Now here's the kicker... if he didnt disclose trans issue at time deposit was made... he breaks the contract under disclosure law and must refund deposit.
Threaten small claims.
Im not an attorney.
I see nowhere in that article where it says that.
Closest thing I saw was purchaser must make seller write refundable deposit on reciept or dont leave deposit.
The article you posted was for dealers also. This is a private seller.

That's BS man!!
$200 for a test drive??? Ridiculous. You would really have to come back to your written (I hope it wasn't verbal) agreement with the deposit. If it doesn't say the deposit is "Non-Refundable" you should be entitled to get it back, assuming you did not damage the bike and have proper reason to back out of the sale, which you do since the tranny has issues.
Did you actually write up a deposit or sale agreement of any type?
I have a written receipt from the owner. I also have a witness to the verbal agreement that "I would buy the bike, if it was mechanically sound" (determined by test drive).
The hassle of taking this pos to court is annoying... But i'm going to go for my 200, plus all the court fees, plus 100 bucks in lost wages. I'm also going to subpoena the guy that was with me and witnessed the deal - that way he gets paid for his time on the owner of this bike's dime.
All in all, if i win this guy will be paying out ~$500.
Sounds like you got your ducks in a row. With not disclosing trans issue I think you got him.. once you file he may change his tune.
Take him to The Peoples Court. Judge Marilyn is hot.
