I'm just about fully geared up (proper jacket, helmet, gloves, dianese knee/shin guards) with the exception of proper boots. When riding now, I have a pair of work boots I use to wear for manual labor moments (ties well above the ankle, no steel toe, leather). However, I purposely do not ride to work because I cannot wear these boots there.
My issue is, I work on a college campus. I am a graduate student, a graduate assistant, I teach two classes, and I assist in numerous others. I DO NOT have a place where I can leave my stuff (no office, no locker, etc). I must wear (at bare minimum) khakis to work. I typically wear dress pants. I essentially live out of my bookbag for the 12 hours i'm on campus.
I would love to start riding to campus but cannot find a pair of boots I can wear comfortably all day, that come above the ankle, and that don't look like i'm a coal miner! I am walking or standing for the better part of the day and I must maintain a professorial appearance.
Am i asking for too much? If so, i just wont ride to campus. but on a day like today, when my car is acting up and the sun is out, my bike would have been ideal.
Most of the brands out there are useable and can be worn to work with out any every one has a fav brand never less they are all good and will do the job

the last color scheme on that listing may work; they are solidly black and gray (as opposed to the black ones that have white visible below the ankle) and do not have a heel.
These may work, but i'd have to see them in person before coughing up that premium.

Gaerne or the Sidi both brands are awesome I had them both my latest Gaerne was the (GRW model )right now I wear the Sidi Stealth ST model comfortable , light weight , offer tons of protection
Love my alpinestars. I have the smx plus' and I could wear them all day. I just popped off the toe slider to make them not "stick out" as much and I don't need it anyway. Very comfortable and extremely well built. Especially if you have wide feet, they fit the best.
And these when I'm just working for a few hours...
The Dainese's are definitely more comfortable but less casual of the two.
The Puma's needed some serious breaking in when I first got them, but now I can wear them on a 12 hour shift, no problem.

I didn't go for the normal look. Idc what people say these are bad ass and that's why I got them. Just see what u like man.
I will add this, if you're looking for excellent ankle protection, you cannot go wrong with the Dainese Torques or Daytona boots. I dare you to try and bend them.
However, my girlfriend's SIDI Vertigo's are a different story.
Still a full size boot but lacks the ankle support that the Dainese's and Daytona's provide.
Coal Miner- Icon super duty FTW. Definitely better than the professors and their sandals.
Please avoid the pumps... unless they have re-inforced soles, otherwise the only thing different between basketball shoes and lots of riding 'boots' is the plastic cup/plate over the ankle, and some reinforcement where it will get all scratched up from your shift lever.
I like Dr. Marten's Wellington boot for work and riding. Steel Toe, slip on, slip resistant, and electricity proof. Comfortable for 10 hour days of being on your feet as long as you do not need extra ankle support. They cover up to half your calf but are not tight around the ankle.
Khakis without overpants doesnt work first of all. You'll have to wash them like daily - no bueno for college chalupa.
I suggest you wear a pair of hiking type shoes with heel protection. Seriously you won't be racing your bike to work for 30miles, or do you? I used to go to work in Jeans most of the times, wore my hiking shoes/boots whatever you want to call em.
Now i leave a pair sneakers at my work desk. Commute in over-pants my racing boots and all and leave it under my desk all day. Shoes at work were the key to making this happen.

I some what agree, but they are better than wearing running shoes, etc.
I don't think hiking boots provide any better protection, correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm still undecided on what i'm going to purchase. I honestly don't think I can pull off a proper set of riding boots while teaching a class. Its not so much me, but the university's policy, as well as my being new and trying to be perceived as well to be hired as an associate professor with tenure track.
those pumas above would definitely work. though not nearly as protective as proper riding boots, they are better than wearing shoes, lol.
also, i've ridding in khakis on orientation days (no class so no laptop, and had room to carry boots in my bag) and it worked out fine.
