I can power wheelie all day, but popping the clutch just makes my bike surge forward?
I know there are like 3,000,000 threads on wheelies (Google said so)
But for the life of me I can't get the front end in the air by clutch wheelieing it.
Power wheelies? All day. Cruise in 1st around 7000 RPMs, and then just gun it. The front end will come up and I can hold it and let it down softly.
But its hard as hell because the throttle is so touchy in 1st gear. I'd like to clutch up in 2nd gear and not have the front tire rise up like it does power wheelieing too.
What am I doing wrong? 15-20 mph, 2nd gear.
I've done it two ways. The first is to accelerate smoothly, pull the clutch in, and while the RPMs are rising I just dump the clutch
The second way is to pull the clutch in, blip the throttle to 8k RPMs, and then dump the clutch.
Both methods result in the bike just surging forward but no vertical movement of the front tire at all.
I am dumping the clutch too, I'm not feathering it.
I think its because I'm not giving it enough throttle, but I'm so afraid of looping it.
What am I doing wrong? Do you "accelerate" while popping the front tire up? Or are you holding the throttle at a set RPM? Is it higher than 8k? What gives?
I haven't clutched second yet but. You don't want to hold the clutch and rev to any set rpm. You want to pull the clutch and twist the throttle as one motion then dump it all in a split second. If it doesn't come up try twisting the throttle farther until it does come up. Have you clutched 1st up? I clutch first at 20mph. Maybe try second at 30-40mph

^^What the poster above me said. I have accidentally put a 250 ninja into a solid wheelie from a stationary position by dumping the clutch while at the same time cranking open the throttle. Haha, this was when I first started riding and I thought it would just accelerate quickly... nope, wheelie time!
its slipping the clutch, not dumping. and 2nd will come up no problem. i used to ride 3rd gear stand ups all day. just try and imitate the sound u hear when u watch videos of people on youtube. dont pay attention to speed or rpms. just roll on the throttle hard from 2nd and right when u feel like its getting into the powerband, one finger slip the clutch in, grab like 3/4 throttle, and slip the clutch out. its a timing/combination thing and make sure your STAYING on the gas when u let the clutch out. far too often ive seen people complain about clutchups and they are backing off the gas when they slip the clutch
I'm wondering how close to sea level you are for 2nd gear clutch ups. I live up high and notice a huge difference when I ride in lower elevation spots. No matter how hard I try the front has never lifted in 2nd for me doing clutch ups. But I've had the front come up from just a power wheelie when I was visiting near the sea.
