I was reading an article in a local newspaper this morning about a new "environmentally friendly" proposal in Paris that would effectively ban vehicles older than 18 years old and motorcycles built before 2004.
In another article I saw that the mayor of Paris - Bertrand Delanoe - was claiming that motorcycle built before 2004 are the "most polluting and the noisiest."
Do we have any members from Paris that can verify whether or not this is actually the case? I find it hard to believe that a bike from 2003 is more polluting than a car from 95'. Either way, it sucks for anyone who's on an older bike.
I think there's some information missing from the article. I suspect they will ban based on the Euro1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 standards for emission, which tend to be associated with years of vehicle production. Many cities are already implementing limited zones that require vehicles with poor emission standards to pay, or pay a higher price, than newer ones.
Milan, where I live, has a really stupid system that bans a lot of cars from the city centre or forces them to pay to enter, which means they all just circulate around that area, creating the same, if not more pollution, since there are even more cars on less road space. The city centre is a better place to be in terms of traffic (the rule doesn't apply to bikes!! :-) at all here), but it hasn't done anything to reduce pollution.
I doubt this plan will fly as it'll alienate a lot of poorer people, most of whom probably voted for this socialist mayor.

That is nuts. What would they do, not let you register it? Would they offer to buy it back?
Yeah its a good question. It sounds like if you're one of those people you're pretty much SOL. Not to mention - as Maaku pointed out - that a lot of these people are probably already in a lower income bracket.

Are you sure? I know C02 readings are lower, but things like N0x gases are wayyyy higher.
Concentration maybe, but you also have to take into account that the volume of gas coming out of the exhaust of a bike in a given time frame is less than most cars than yes.
