Just cleaned my chain the other day at about 500 miles and I really felt the difference when riding. I guess my questions now are: 1) How often to y'all clean your chains? and 2) How much lube is too much? I'm paranoid about not putting enough. This might be a pretty newbie post but I'm still a amateur and I like to hear from your experiences.
I clean mine every couple rides, owner's manual recommends every 200 miles or so. I just spray the chain in one direction with Maxima Chain Wax, moving at a steady pace. Then i go back and lightly wipe the lower edge of the chain so it's not dripping lube that would fling and stick all over stuff. You just want to coat the rollers and in between all the link plates where the rings are.

What my buddy's told me is every 4 gas tanks fill ups clean and lube..
There can never be too much lube I just put the bike on the stand have my gf or cousin spin the tire as I spray the inside with a solid stream one time pass.. Always let it sit at least over nfht or weekend to let it soak in and dry a little or I notice it just splats all over the place..
Also always remember to wipe off tire and over spray to keep the bike clean and not let the lube ruin your grip in a turn. And I always use white lythium.
And to never use and harsh cleaners that can dry out the I rings or something in the chain.. And always check slack and sprocket teeth when cleaning and make sure properly adjusted and not warn. If so replace chain and sprocket.
How often to do it really depends on where you live and how you ride. A state by the ocean will have more salt, Arizona will have more dust, etc. If you ride in the rain, etc. I clean mine once a week unless I end up in the rain, dirt road, etc, and then I clean it right away.
I clean it with wd40 or kerosene and then lube it with pj1. pj1 is GREAT stuff.
I got my first bike this summer and put 6000 miles on it. I tried several cleaners and lubes. I have a chrome swing arm and wheels if anyone can direct me to something that is no fling that would be great!! I used the no fling srays and I'm not satisfied.
A clean, well-lubed chain is a happy chain - it's the best way to prevent unnecessary wear & tear, and as you said - you can tell the difference when you ride! :)
Also - it's best to lube your chain when it's warm (I'm sure you know this) as the wax or lube will "melt" into the links and coat it really well. I've recently switched to chain wax over chain lube because it doesn't seem to fling around as much as lube does. :)

I just wipe mine down with 90w gear oil ever 500 miles(every few weeks) more often if its rainy etc. no sticky mess, no fling. no visible rocks to get stuck, just wont last as long.
have leftover Redline MTL..
make sure you chain is hot/warm, ie immediatly after a ride. <--very important with any lube.

Hahah crazy. My friend just recommended wax over lube for me yesterday. I will definitely give the wax a try when I clean my chain.
Right on! I learned the hard way though that it doesn't like to come off of your plastics (it will, but it's a pain in the ass)... lay some paper towel/newspaper/similar disposable something over your lowers so that when you're spraying it doesn't get on them :)

Don't forget to lube the INSIDE of the chain, the part that touches the sprockets. An O/X ring chain has lube in there for the link pivots already. A light covering on the outside is all it takes to keep it from corroding.
There is no reason to have any fling if you do it right.

Your probably gunna want to use Maxima Chain Wax. It's important to apply to a warm chain and to not use a ton of it. Anything will fling if you apply a lot of it.

will probably get flamed for this... but every time I go to lube the chain, I hold a rag on the chain and use a pressure pack wd40 and spray it and spin tyre. pressure and light oil cleans the **** out of it without a fuss.... quick wipe, quick ride for warmth... then spin tyre and light spray of castrol gear oil and I never have to clean my chain, its gold and shiny all the time.

Cleaning the chain depending on some factors of location and amount of riding time invested is the best part of my day when I get home. I have had one experiance with a chain I failed to maintain....once is all it takes....these comments always are a good reminder....thanks to all...
Lmao this reminds me my buddy just got his new Ninja 300 and has 80 miles on it.
We went for our first ride and he's drilling me with questions I'm glad to answer and I tell him about maitnance and he asks about the chain..
I told him buy or use my lube and so it every 500 or so and he asks ok what's the difference and I explained and he asked how much because our chains look the same..
I wiped my finger and it had lube and he wiped his and literally BONE AS* DRY!
You think Kwai would put some lube but literally that thing has seen 0 lube.. I was really suprised by that.
Planning to do mine after my next ride (never done it before). I'm going to use a steel wire brush and it to clean it...Anyone see any problems with that?
Also wondering what kind of difference I'll feel (if any) after it's cleaned/lubed?
And what issues arise from not keeping it cleaned/lubed regularly? (No I'm not planning to neglect it lol)
I once used to much chain lube and it was all over the side of the tire (suzuki bandit 1200s) and it was an early dewey sat. morning going into work for some OT, usualy would start the bike and warm up untill it would idle at about half or third choke (enrichener), went about 100 feet to a stop sign, kinda rolled thru (no traffic in my appartment complex at 530 am) released the clutch at maybe 5 mph and a little throttle and there she went out from under me. bike had the factory case cover guards saved the engine. broke about 2 inches of clutch lever and left mirror, amazingly very little rash to the plastics. my whole left side (ribs, shoulder, elbow, hip, everything) was hurt. bike slid about 50 feet and hit a curb. helmet had a good rash on it from the pavement. I was able to hobble over to the bike stand it up and crank on it foor about 20 seconds or so and it started up. got to work hurting like hell and my new nickname was fallzaw (only at work) dads nickname is sawzall like the tool. Need one to cut his hair. I was young. probly used a half a can might have been bel ray brand or something. like dude said early in thread, make sure your tire is clean too!
