and lots of people were out riding today. The city has had a very low accident rate lately and you feel fairly safe. Then I see on the local news some drughead crossed the median and went head-on into a rider. The rider tried laying the bike down but he was still in the path of the oncoming car which hit the bike and then hit him, killing him instantly. I almost wonder if he'd been better off staying on the bike and getting launched over the car. The driver of the car obviously never even hit the brakes.
The driver failed two sobriety tests plus they suspect he was high on other drugs combined with alcohol. He came out without a scratch but now faces criminal DUI charges.
Even when you are doing everything right, some crackhead can still come out of nowhere and end you.
Thoughts out to the family of the rider. I hope the driver spends a very long time behind bars.
Someone crossing the center and coming at me head-on is one of the things I fear more than anything. You know they aren't in control (for whatever reason), you have very little time to take any action and even if you do you can't be sure what the nut behind the wheel is going to do next. "Laying it down" is the very last thing I would try because you are basically just giving up and hoping the other guy doesn't run you over. Ride it out and aim for an escape but don't go to the ground without a fight.
