First bike

Hi everyone. I just got me an 08 cbr600rr as a gift. Has about 15000 miles on it. I already did an oil change and was thinking that I should also change the plugs and air filter. It runs fine just wanted to make everything fresh since I'm the new owner. It that a smart thing?

Sure is smart. You don't know what the previous owner did to it or if he ever changed the oil. And welcome to the .net

Welcome, congrats on your bike. Do you already have a M1 license? Make sure you take the MSF course and practice emergency situations in safe places. 600s dont make the best beginner bikes. Also buy quality gear and wear it.

As for the bike, at 15k miles, i wouldnt worry much about the plugs and air filter, but its not a bad idea to check them. I would definately check the chain and tires. Make sure they have planty of the thread left and the chain isnt rusted or dirty.

Post pics of your bike and ride safe.

Well if it really was a gift im assuming it came from a really good friend. If so, ask him the recent maintenance and what he has had done to it. If the guy/girl isnt a close friend I would take the VIN# to the police.....just what I would do, but thats just me being paranoid.

Zlow28 thank you! I'm taking my permit test next week then going to enroll in the training classes they offer at the near by college. And yea I do need to get some riding gear. The tires look good but the chain can use some cleaning. Ill check the plugs and filter this weekend.

CBR TIME the bike was from my sister because she upgraded to a Ducati.

Welcome aboard...
What a nice sister you have!

Regarding the tires, I've seen tires that look brand new but they are 5/6 year old tires.
Check the date stamp and make sure they were made recently...

The date stamp is a 4 digit code, found after the DOT stamp.
ie 4110 or 4111...
The first two digits are for the week the tire was made and the last two digits are for the year.

Take it easy and learn slow, I started my riding career on 2006 GSX-R 750 and I'm still alive. lol
Good luck!

My gift for my birthday(apart from what my girlfriend and parents did, thanks to them) was £913 debt i don't have, all happened recently and today a failed driving test so more expense, don't have a hope in hell of saving all this back up as my insurance policy has now kicked off again, so I'm f*cked for christmas...yay

Also I'd recommend as new bike get honda to do the 16k service...personally i keep full service history so honda does them all but it is a big service so it'd find out any problems if you have honda do that one

People lie alot, part of the reason i don't usually buy private anymore

Good luck with the bike. If it's running fine I wouldn't worry about the plugs. they should be good until around 25-30000 miles or beyond.

Welcome.
Here is a link to the maintenance schedule. If your sis didn't change the plugs, I'd go ahead and do them. They are do at 16k. Also, helpful hint for the plugs if you can get the actual part number and look it up that way you get a better deal (no clue why) When I looked up mine by the name brand and bike model they were like 12-16 bucks a plug. Someone told me to do it with just the part number and I got the same plugs for $4 a piece.
