You can buy a Smith and Wesson M&P15-22 for around $450, and if you wanted something even cheaper the Mossberg Tactical 22 is about $299 at Dicks Sporting goods (and even cheaper online).

If you had $600 to buy an AR, you can get the M&P15 Sport for about $650. this is the 5.56/.223 Caliber. The M&P15-22 is a 22LR version not to be confused with the standard 5.56/.223. Also you can start with handguns or rifles, either way its your choice. Most people start with handguns and move up to rifles, but you can just get a rifle you like and go from there.

If your local Walmart carries guns, I've seen the DPMS Sport AR selling for $587. Although this is a low-end basic rifle, its good enough to start learning and get yourself started on AR15's.

Let me know if you have any other questions, i'd be more than glad to help.

Edit: If you want are looking for affordable handguns around $300 that are still reliable and American made, I recommend Ruger P95 or Smith and Wesson Sigma/SD9. Some will say the trigger on the S&W Sigma is too heavy, but it just takes getting used to.
I have read myself up a little on the gun front lately, and become a little more familiar with certain topics.

I think I am in the game for 3 things (in no particular order): 12 Gauge shotgun (Mossberg 500 or Maveric 88?), AR-15 (16"?) .223/5.56 NATO (for as good price as possible w/ rail for scope etc.) and either a Rock Island Armory 1911 or some other handgun (I am not sure whether 9mm or/vs .45 ACP, or if I should go for a 1911 vs. another type of handgun...).

Also, if you have suggestions for a good, inexpensive (-tactical) folding knife, I would also look into that.

Please come with suggestions, recommendations and life lessons if applicable. Are there some gun forums out there that are as big as ar15.com you guys know of / are members on that you would recommend as well for these kinds of things? Thanks.

Milled or stamped receiver?

I don't know much about AKs but I would love to build one after I get my ARs finished.

1911

I'm wanting to get a 1911 but don't really know a whole lot about them. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good price/brand of 1911 that would be good?

As a 1911 enthusiast, here is my opinion on them - to get a 1911 to function and perform like a Glock/XD/M&P, you need to spend about $3500. No lie. Unless all of the parts are quality forged steel and were hand fitted by a craftsman, they will fail eventually. As long as you keep that in mind when buying a non-custom 1911, you'll be happy with your purchase.

Personally, for the lower end 1911s, I like the STI, Springfield and Rock Island Armory offerings. Whatever you do, stay the **** away from Kimber, because when that Schwartz safety fails you, it'll happen you need it the most.

I have a Taurus 1911. They offer a lifetime warranty with all of their guns, but from what I've read they have quite a long turn around time on warranty claims (seems the same with all other manufactures). I'm not too worried about sending in for warranty work though because I've never even shot it yet . Working on my AR15 build at the moment and then I'm going to be looking into reloading. I'll eventually get to the 1911 lol

Nodak Spud stamped receiver, gonna see how this build turns out and if so,I have five other kits sitting in boxes ready to go,but finding receivers is getting hard,I had five on order from Nodak and they are back ordered till the end of Dec,start of Jan,so I just went on Gunbroker and bought one to get this one going, after my last WASR,that was just a round thrower,I wanted something a little better, have a Russian AKM kit that is stamped 64 and I really want to get that going next, beautiful laminated wood and it looks like it was never issued, also have a Krink kit that is stamped 84,waiting on my paperwork and tax stamp to come back till I get that built, then also have a Russian black furniture side folder kit AK-74 thats stamped 94,I almost didn't win that auction, last kit is a Yugo AK-47 kit that never made it out of the factory and it was never stamped with a number, just cut up and put in a box.

And to jump into the 1911 debate a little late..

A 1911 is nothing more than a pretty or race gun.. I would not put my life on one for combat or everyday carry.. If you want reliability either buy a wheel gun Glock or sig.

And before someone calls me bias I've shot my share of Springfield's a les bear kimbers RIAs and sig 1911s... With simple range use I can into FTF or FTE every now and again with a few ever couple rounds with good and cheap factory ammo.. My buddy's Taurus was a POS he ended up replacing so man parts it was a new gun..

Before you say I'm a Glock fan boy which I am for a reason I do love my 1911s and am in line for a les and SA Operator as we speak.. But again they are great beautiful guns but are not build for anything but precision and looks anymore and before you throw out their time in service I can give you countless horror stories on guys and gals who can go on for days with the POS issued gear they out up with firearms and all..

But if you want a semi and want it to run to Glock or sig maybe HK not 100% only so much time with that gun to be for sure.. But my Glock 17 has 4k rounds and counting with minimum cleaning (I'm getting lazy and trying to have it jam) with all types of ammo and tons of cheap bulk second reloads.. As you guys can see from my collection I have tons of ammo and actually shoot my guns because I have to buy ammo and go through that every 6 months.

I use my guns in range and at combat classes and I work on a military base and have pro pages of knowing the people I do who let me know and do way more than I should so I have a lot of info most couldn't know..

But again I'm not against one firearm more than the next they all have their place and all don't have a place.. Yes you can get a Glock to jam but its almost as common as finding a 1911 that won't.. 1911s are very picky again why I say great beautiful guns but battle sidearms.. Not so much.. Sorry 1911 guys its just how it is.. But again not every Glock or insert name here is perfect.. But 1911s in my hands and hands of my friends from the 20+ I've seen/shot have a good amount of issues with feeding or ejecting or parts breaking as can be said for how many glocks I've ran and seen run in person at the range competition or classes not have issues. Speaking pre gen 4 those are just horrid crap IMO. But slowly gettin better but still have a long way before they make my approved list.

But I'm lucky to have enough range time bullets down range to confidently say this.. So anyone have any questions or disagreements ill happily give my $.02 on what I know.. And I don't read magazines or watch history channel for their biased paid reason.. This is all 100% range/competition/class experience so no BS being fed here. Also I'm not really a fan of any gun more than another because I've grown to realize that's just simple mixed thinking and pride which just clutters your experience to new better things.. So guns to me are tools and ill be happy to say what have worked broken and just frustrated and disappointed me while putting time in

And by all means I'm no expert or any where close but I'm cut and dry and will tell it out it is. Weather you I or they like it. No reason to lie or hide truth and facts IMO if a gun sucks ill admit it and sell it or not buy one.

I agree with you on the 1911's CK. The only reason I have mine is because I like the look of them and the history behind them (hence why I haven't shot it). It's my only gun I have for looks. All of the rest of mine are exactly like you said: tools. They function correctly and have a purpose. The 1911 that I have shot was a Springfield and that SOB jammed at least once every magazine

I went with the coyote just because for the same price you get the extra knife. I don't see myself ever needing it but it's there. When the wife and I go out on some trails it is just strapped to my backpack. I have other plans for it as well.

Thanks that was my first build and pride and joy.. Over paid a little due to excitement but still worth what I out in.. My next is either a GAP 18 or 20" M40a5 or a GAP or build up a M11 mark II clone or AR10 style dirt anchor.

What's the use for the gun? Are you hunting with it?

What's the use for the gun? Are you hunting with it?
I want something powerful and also has range so I was leaning toward the 300 ultra but I do a lot of work in Africa so I could use a 375 h&h for pretty much anything there. In the long run I'll probably get both or just the 375 and a 308, tough decisions.
