My stolen bike never registered as stolen

So my 2007 got stolen in 2010 in San Diego, CA. on campus late at night. I notified the police immediately and reported it stolen. They have an officer come out and took a report. They said they would call me if anything comes up, and of course I never heard abything. Fast forward two years later to today when I got bored and check my VIN# on two different websites and the bike comes up clean. WTF!!!!

For more than two years my stolen bike may be ridden around legit on the streets? They never registered it stolen in their database. FCking pissed at how these cops work. Worthless retards

I checked both these sites and both came up clean. OMG i'm speechless.

My vin is f anyone know any other resources to check this up. I appreciate it. At this time, should I even bother notifying the DMV or police about this...again?

I'm pretty sure you need to report it to your insurance company and they tag it as stolen/salvaged... I believe the cops just have it in the data base of their own as reported.

I'm never surprised by the ineptness of local LEO's.

I reported it to insurance the day after it got stolen, but I guess they don't check/notify dmv either. It got stolen in San Diego so i'm pretty sure it's in pieces or somewhere in Mexico. Just pissed that there was a slight chance of it being recovered, but that chance got shited on by lazy cops.

Yeah, it's the cops fault. I would blame the insurance company too, but why use logic when cop bashing makes you look cooler?

Logic tells me that The insurance company reporting is what put it on public records and various registration sites as stolen property regardless of the police agency reporting it or not

That seems to be the new rage lately.

Thankfully the other forum I am on does not tolerate cop bashing one bit. If you have a valid debate they will let it go, one little bit of bashing and the ban hammer starts to fly.

As others have pointed out, just because the VIN isn't showing up as "stolen" on public record websites, doesn't necessarily mean it isn't entered in as "stolen" in the police VIN database system.

Additionally, if you want to truly confirm whether it's been reported stolen or not in the police database, I suggest speaking with the reporting agency to follow up and confirm whether or not the VIN was entered in the police database.

You never know, but perhaps the dispatcher accidentally mistyped a digit in the VIN during entry. Human mistakes do happen...

I'm planning on calling SDPD, DMV, and my insurance tomorrow to confirm this. Three years back, I requested a copy of the police report three times and they've never sent me one. They did send me a survey about how the cop conducted himself...really helpful.
I forgot to mention that this is campus police I dealt with, but they are fully within the SD police department.

It was at UCSD. San Diego has the second highest motorcycle theft rate in the nation. Within one year, my bike along with four other friends of mine got their bikes stolen. It's too easy to get it across the border.

If you don't have a garage, leave it at home. I would say bike theft in SD is pretty organized. It's been going on for many years and no one seems to be able to do anything about it.

I would check first, could simply be those sites havent updated...in 10years nvm 2 you never know...but that sucks if those are the sites people check when buying 2nd hand bikes, they're gonna think somethings legit when it isn't

after 2 years your bikes likely not to be in one peice anymore though so it's only the chasis and engine that could be left, the theif wont care about those he's made money on the rest and got it free, his overheads are...£0 just risk of jail

Then you better not call them if your house gets broken into, bike gets stolen or if one of your loved ones gets raped or murdered. You don't want them spreading their lies around in such hard times.

And young guys on sport bikes with video cameras trying to make cops look bad don't??

Well I call the DMV and SDPD, no records of my bike being stolen was ever recorded. FML.

Some of you can sit here and call it cop bashing or whatnot. But this didnt happen to you. If you were in my shoes, you wouldn't be so cool about it.

That sucks. If you could find out the officer's name that handled this for you, you should filed a report against him. He probably thought you were a punk with a bike and deserved to get it stolen.

You originally filed a theft report with your campus police, correct? And they are a branch of SDPD or how exactly does that work? Were you also required to report the theft with SDPD or another agency?

Did you get a copy of the actual report after you reported the theft (for your insurance company or your own records?) or at least note down the complaint number?

Documentation is key.

If you have kept any type of records, keep them handy because you will need them to address this matter via the chain of command with campus police (and possibly SDPD?) and ask WHY the theft was never processed or entered into the stolen vehicle (police VIN search) database.

G'luck...

SDPD designate a few cruisers to the UCSD campus, and we call them campus police. They are fully within SDPD, not a branch. As posted before, I have requested a copy of the police report several times, but they never sent me one. I diid not have full coverage (stupid me) so the insurance didn't have to pay out, therefore they never needed proof that my bike was stolen.

I'm over it, I know it's gone. Just pissed off when I found out.
