I let the temp on the display show up (~95ish) before heading out. That's about equivalent to letting your car warm up to the point that the temp sensor goes from cold to normal/off.
mine starts to read at 97, thats when i take off easy
But during colder months, around 50's and lower, i'd let it to go ~120's ish or whenever the exhaust doesn't puff white smoke anymore
Mine starts to read about 98, I take off after I get a number reading and take it easy out of neighborhood. By the time I get to light 1.5 miles from my house I'm golden.

I stated up my bike and the temperature went from 96-137' within a min. Plus there was a lot of white smoke coming from the exhaust. Is this a bad thing? Kinda smelled like oil burning as well

Your fine bro, just ride it out.

White smoke usually doesn't mean oil burning. Oil usually adds a blueish tint to the smoke.
I'm guessing its just from it being cold outside. Your bike is fine.
I like to let it get as hot as possible before I go. If I'm at home ill start it and come inside and get my **** together. By the time I have my gear it's up to temp. If I'm out and it gets time to cool down Ill start it up and put my gear on while it warms. It usually shows a reading by then. If not sometimes ill just go or check up on my texts.
Letting it get as hot as possible is not recommended FYI. You ideally want to get the engine moving after 30secs/1min at an easy pace to bring it up to temp. Letting it idle cold keeps the engine in the vulnerable cold state for longer.
I second what everyone else says - when the digits show up on my gauge.

cold engine will wear faster in my opinion, i dont take off under 49C but there's always white smoke before it warms up when the air temp is low, I noticed when things starting getting below 4C, usually stops around 49C as well, with modern vehicles it wont break the next day because of it but optimum temp on honda's is around 91C....so why you guys take off at 35C(when it comes up first digits) I dunno but your choice it will get to about 70 within half a mile though as your ECU runs it richer to heat it up faster...you can thank honda for doing the work for you ;)

Because no modern engine ... Or even old engine requires the temps
Do you know why you used to have to warm up cars? Cause the choke sucked an they wouldn't run until warm lol
The ecu richening the mixture is exactly what gets around that issue

Read my reply mate... it's clear why you shouldn't let any modern engine, let alone your RR's, it's because most damage is done to an engine when it is cold.
Now letting it idle will take longer for it to warm up therefore keeping it in that 'vulnerable cold-state' for longer.
Plus as a final point, read your owners manual. Clearly says it in there too!
I will let the engine warm up to the point upon which the indication on the meter has changed from "- -" to when an actual temperature is displayed and then ride. According to the owners manual the safe operating temperature range is between 35 and 121 Celsius.
My '04 starts showing at 97F, but I let it get up to at least 120F~130F before I actually ride away. I feel better seeing the temperature go a little higher and for the oil to run through for a few minutes.
