So I'm just sitting here at my desk thinking, "man I really dont like my job" and was wondering how many people out there actually do love their jobs. I have to say that I envy those people. I've always thought about switching careers but I don't want to start at the bottom all over again.
Also, I feel like if I did something I really liked...I'd end up hating it after 5-10 years anyway. I have a friend that used to love working on cars so he became a mechanic. It was cool for a couple of years but then he ended up hating it.
How many of you actually love what you do and enjoy going to work?
I'm a college student with a part time job. I can't say I hate it cuz I'm payed better than most kids my age for super easy labor but its boring as all hell and I work till about 9. It's a love/hate kinda job for me.
I love my job! I'm a teacher and I hate the amount I get paid for my work and the endless bureaucracy. At the start, this really grated on me and brought me down, but I've learned to ignore it as much as I can and concentrate on the parts I like.
We actually do a tonne of unpaid work in case some of you think we get huge holidays and finish at 3:30 (or whenever school's out where you are). The fact is, good teachers spend a large percentage of their evenings prepping, marking or working on projects or with extra-curricular stuff. If you do this, the job is very rewarding on a personal level, but you can't think it's going to pay off (except through promotions, though that means even more bureaucracy).
Anyway, if you're not too old, I'd say consider changing, not just your job, but your attitude about work. I'm not suggesting you have a bad attitude or anything, just that you have to find the things about the job that'll bring you satisfaction and focus on them while ignoring the BS. Only you can decide if there are enough good things and you can get around the BS.
Yup there are coworkers that hate their job but I like it. It's all about attitude. Don't be stuck, try to challenge yourself and that usually doesn't go unnoticed with your superiors. You're going to be there 8 hours regardless, might as well enjoy it.

I work in wholesale insurance. Most people have probably never heard of it. I basically act as a middle man between the insurance company and the broker. If I can put a good deal together and sell it, my company splits the commission with the broker. I dont get paid off of commission though. I have a straight salary and I can't complain too much about how much I get paid. The problem is that I'm selling a product that no one wants. When you buy a new bike and the salesperson hands you the keys I imagine he gets some joy out of seeing the buyers hapiness. No one is happy when they get handed a new shiny insurance policy. Even if I did save them $30,000 in premium. The fact is that they are still buying something that they are required to have and dont necessarily want.
I'm 34 so switching careers isnt out of the question but I'd probably take a $50k pay cut if I started a whole new career. And who knows if I would like the new career.
PS- where are you in Italy? My family is in Avellino and Salerno.
Im a college student and I've only had summer jobs that have all been with agricuture but I love it, but hopefully htis spring I can get a part time job during school at the local bike shop, nothing much just stocking shelves or whatever but still would like working in a place like that

Yeah, sure, I can't fully grasp all the details, Red, only you can - just my perspective on my own work, which has changed over the years. I'm sure you'll find the right path for yourself in the end. I was in a similar position about the pay cut years ago and took it - I moved from Japan to Italy and my pay dropped 50% - moved because I got married. I was irritated about that for a long time, but get more satisfaction from the job, especially interactions with students, than I did before.
I'm in Milan, by the way. It's not as bad as I suggest with that location. Lots of great places to go out, things to do, events... as long as the smog doesn't get to me first. :-)
Take your time and look at all the options and what's really going to make you happy. What about starting your own business in the field you're in? Might give you a lot more satisfaction doing it for yourself instead of the man!
I'm a college student and work part time as a credit analyst at a bank. There are times when I really want to work at a bank after college, but there are times and I want to just throw everything off my desk due to boredom lol

Thought about it. I grew up with that entrepreneur attitude. My family came here from Italy and started in manual labor, then all opened their own business doing some sort of construction work. So i've been around that my whole life and I think that mentality is part of my problem. I work harder and expect to be immediately reimbursed for that...but that's unfortunately not how it always works in corporate America.
I'm sure I'll figure it out. I was just curious how many people out there truly love what they do.

I work at a credit union as my other job and its fun actually. The people I work with make it fun. I feel that's a big thing when determining if your jobs gonna suck or be awesome. Plus the crazy ass member we get.
Love my job, seriously. I work from my loft and at the data center. I manage the Engineering team and do all of the lead engineer work. I have no idea what a 40 hour week is but I can work the hours I choose.
The pay freakin rocks.

Love my career most days since I can work remotely, freedom to be online at any moment, flexible hours, pays well, good job security and has a great potential for career growth.
Can be boring sometimes when budgets get slashed or when senior management has a self destructive approach towards most things and doesn't care about what you're designing/building/maintaining.

Just got out of school with an engineering job. The pay is pretty awesome for a starting salary and first job. The only thing I don't like is I don't get enough responsibilities. Haven't been working long enough to say if i like it or hate it, just working to pay off some student loans first.
I like my job for the most part... I'm a Motorcycle, ATV, Sled Parts & Accessories Sales guy. ;)
Too bad Honda pulled out and did their selfish/stupid "powerhouse" thing. Really killed their sales in Canada. They WERE #1 in motorcycle sales, now they're #3!!!

Im the district manager of a Cricket wireless (its like boost mobile or virgin mobile if your on the east side) franchise i work 8-9hours a day 5 sometimes 6 days a week and i mostly spend my days riding around my 5 stores telling college kids how to sell cell phones and clean a store for less then minimum wage a hour but atleast they give me a company card for gas and redbull! I hate my job sometimes but im only 19 and DISTRICT MANAGER looks freakin sweet on a resume and the owner of the franchise is one of the wisest men iv ever met and he passes on a lot of insite into the world of human managment and closing sales

I love my job as well. I'm a Senior Manager at a start up medical device company that develops implants for spine surgery. I worked for a large company for 5 1/2 years before this in increasing levels of responsibility but the politics started to grate on me a bit (although I worked with great people). I love the challenges of a start up. I manage the product development, downstream marketing, and the relationships with surgeons that help develop our products and ultimately use them. Honestly the need to constantly learn new things to keep my A game sharp and the constant challenge keeps me happy. And of course the pay is not too shabby.
I feel for those who hate their jobs. It can be a drag, I know. I'm blessed and thankful for the opportunity I have to do what I do.
