I love the design and performance of German cars but if you want the reliability and you don't necessarily need the power of American muscle plus you don't want to spend too much and you want manual transmission then you should go Japanese (speaking from experience)

FWIW German cars will run forever IF and ONLY IF you perform the maintenance they suggest when they suggest it. Most of the time things like window motors, plastic impellers and **** like that ends up being covered under a warranty/recall where they will fix it for free. On VW/Audi, the biggest thing is the timing belt/chain replacement. Do it at the suggested time/mileage(I want to say 80k-100k) or you can have major issues.
Maintenance on my VW was super easy and it was my first car. As with anything, do your research, buy the right parts and you shouldn't have issues.

His car has been run like this for the past 30,000 miles. No issues at all! I am following closely because I was not a believer in their reliability. This car has forged internal from the factory and can handle 16-18psi daily without issues. Highway MPG gets 27-29mpg
Really look into them, you'd be surprised! N54tech.com If you want the car more tame or better gas....it comes with 7 MAPS that can be changed on the fly.

For what you get, they are priced well. Much better build quality than a Corvette, many more options/luxuries, and for about $1,500 in bolts-on they will greatly out perform the base model/GS corvettes. Of course this isIMO (and I am a corvette fan lol)

Someone said "older Porsche" so I figured I'd chime in. I love my Porsche 944 it's definitely older but with the rear mounted 5spd trans there's still not much on the road today that will hang with me in the twisties. The only problem with it I could see would be maintenance but I've learn to do all the work myself. Having said that if I were you I'd probably go with a BMW I drove a friends M3 and loved it.
