J i think I'm the only one that got that. or really understands the importants zildjan, and paiste have played in our world not to mention pearl and love the crisp snap of a good piccolo snare.
Yeah buddy! My good friend rocked a piccolo for years before recently switching to a maple porkpie. Unfortunately I totally forgot and lost the auction on a paiste signature by 4bucks

In fact I also have an electro-acoustic guitar... But the mic is screwed, so I only use her when I go the park or stuff like that...
Still, most of the music I play on my electric guitar is not Metal... but of course metal is my first choice when trying to annoy the neighbours.. Yeah! (Green Day - Basket case is usually my first choice!)

Hella nice setup! How did you get started into playing?
My first wow moment came from Iron Maidens live after death album I got my hands on as a kid and listened to it over and over(the phantom of the opera on that album still brings back good memories), but I started early at the age of four with my grandfathers guitar and learned a lot of folk songs. While at the same time my dad had an eclectic taste in music to say the least with maiden, Sabbath, who, sex pistols, skynyrd, all the way to johnny cash and merle haggard on constant rotation. I fell in love with maiden very quickly. Then I progressed to classical training at 8 and picked up the bass around the same time while dabbling In drums also.
In high school I was in several mediocre garage bands that was more focused on other things lol we played local parties and such. We in all honesty were getting fairly decent(I was back and forth bass and lead guitar) untill our drummer and friends passed away in a car accident. I laid it down for few years.
Now I've been playing for fun more at my cousins house who has become obsessed with drums:). These guys are a little more focused on the who and soundgarden and such but oh well I still get to play lol.
Edit: I just got my cousin into testament he is struggling a bit on drums with it but he loves it now

So you haven't been playing long at all. Just since you were four! Hahaha, while I was trying to electricute things with Lite Bright, you were rocking the acoustic. Incredible man.

I'm glad you and your drummer are both a little outside of your comfort zones. Both of you can push eachother in different directions. Certainly you're pushing him more than him pushing you, but it's all good.

Actually its impossible to center one group into only one music style...
For example Guns n'roses... you can't say they are only rock... they have very soft ballades...
In the case of basket case... I just did my own cover of the song... much "loud" with more noise

Every band has its ballads, it doesnt mean they have forsaken their genre. Many bands compose songs that are not an exact fit to the template of music they play, but that is fine. For example Testament, a thrash metal band, composed a song called 'The Ballad' listen to it and compare it to some of their classics like 'Over the Wall' or 'DNR' very different, but they are still a thrash band and have never been anything else. Green Day is punk rock. Playing their music very loud doesn't make it metal by the way . If you used very heavey distortion, tripled the BPM, then maybe I could try to pass what you played 'which I have yet to see/hear' as a metal version.

I can play a few chords that I remember from a college class, and make my way through a couple scales, but I'd like to practice more on a scheduled basis. Can anyone give me pointers on what/how I should practice in order to learn the fretboard? What have you all done to become better as a guitarist?

I took lessons since I was like 8. Basically just learn scales. Scales will help you get good at solos and stuff. For chords get yourself an easy guitar book and learn the simple songs. Those will help you learn chords and help you get better and switching between chords faster. Then learn bar chords. I don't usually play rock I'm more a fingerpicker so I don't do solos that well. Just takes some hard work, time, and dedication. There's a bunch of websites and apps to help you learn chords and stuff. Check out ultimateguitar.com. You can search any song you wan to learn and it will show you all the chords and lyrics. Learning songs you like will keep you interested because basic work will bore you very easily. And please. Don't learn tabs. Lol. Hope this helps!
Get yourself a metronome, or dl an app for your phone. Use it!
Learn the notes on the fretboard, and learn to read (helps with visualization). Some people are against learning tab notation, but I think it's also a great tool for visualization.
Learn the basic major and minor chord fingerings.
Look up some music theory stuff so you can learn the difference between modes, tones, and determine how scales fit with chord progressions. Modes are all about "color" - creating a mood. Change modes, and a progression can be happy, sad, angry, etc. Learn them, they'll help you be more expressive with your music.
Play around with chromatics - used right, they're very tasty.
If you can afford it, get some recording equipment. Nothing makes you a better player than listening to yourself play and being an honest critic.
You don't have to do all that stuff to play well, but if you understand what you're doing, it'll make it easier to create your own music. You'll get stuck in ruts occasionally, and having a good working knowledge of the instrument and theory can keep you from staying stuck in a rut for an extended period.

As for getting better at guitar.. I hate to give pointers because no 2 people learn the same way. If you learn too systematically I feel like you lose your ability to be creative and trail your own path. I think the best thing to do is just play as much as possible and mess around in the unknown. In other words, don't be afraid to break the rules a little bit.
I was hoping to see a post from a fellow drummer. Lol. Much respect to the guitar players but I am a drummer as well. Basic tama rockstar set but my cymbals are my thing. Rocking the zildgians from k customs 14 and 16, a custom 16 and 18 efx, oriental china, 8" and 10" splash. Thats my other fun outside of bike.
I'm just glad there's still musicians out there. Lol. Now we got Justin bieber wannabes and all that so I felt people were losing interest in playing instruments. Thank God the world of music isn't completely dying.
Have two Strats, one from the 80's and another from 2007. Love both of them. No real passion to play anything seriously, but do enjoy working out songs and things.

Isn't it all unknown when you first start? How do you break the rules if you don't know the rules in the first place?
I agree with you, that learning to play requires playing (a lot!). Having the knowledge of "the rules" is just another tool in the toolkit, to me, though. Creativity can't really be taught.
