Crack in frame, help removing it please! Pictures.





Hey guys, found two cracks in my frame today. One small and one pretty big. My plan is to remove the frame and then get it Tig welded. Anyone have any instructions on removing the frame? I need to get a repair manual.

If that was me I would not risk my life plus if you decide to sell it no one will buy it might as well buy a frame I know it's money spent but that will get recovered some what when u sell the bike the other way no one in his right mind will buy such bike

looks like a deep scratch to me. but i would get it checked out by a shop, if its a crack i wouldnt ride on it.

Yeah they are cracks because they are also on the other side of the frame, the side facing inwards. Im guessing it happened from doing wheelies the wrong way of something of that nature (previous owners). You dont think that if I had a good welder and he did a Tig weld the way it should be done I would be fine?

Why would a nice clean Tig weld be so dangerous? I was riding today with the crack (I didnt know it was there at the time) and I was getting on it and the bike was perfectly straight and solid.

I'd be less concerned about having those cracks welded and more concerned about what other damage is hiding unseen. It's not easy to crack a frame so some weaker components may be more damaged and just haven't been exposed yet.

You have to think that any impact great enough to crack your frame is great enough to break something else. I've seen bikes dropped off cliffs or slid into poles come out with untouched frames.

Are you the original owner? Who owned the bike before you? Did you run the vin, was it dropped and rebuilt?

Any and every suspension component, and especially their mounting points including bolts, and mounting points where the engine and frame meet. You're gonna have to get real familiar with your bike

It's from doing stoppies, iv seen it on zx6r's and a few gsxr's that were being stunted. Basically by throwing up the rear wheel it puts strain on the front of the bike and eventually cracking the frame. My friends just welded up the frames and continued riding but those were stunt bikes.

OP...you can weld it,

and use it as a stunter.

like dynamic said above.

wouldn't use it for much else, a hard shock could get it cracking again.

Aluminum will fail in seconds after a crack like that develops, if stressed again.

TIG may work....but watch out!.

Has anyone ever had a frame break clean in half while they were riding?

From what Im reading, if you weld it then heat treat it you will be good. Back to the original post topic..nobody has any input on frame removal?

Obviously the frame crack from stress probably caused by someone else stunting it. All I plan on doing is riding it, no wheelies and crap like that, Im in flight training in the Air Force Im not trying to die on my bike. I feel like if I weld it and just drive like a normal person, with the occasional wide open throttle I dont see why it would be a problem.

To remove the frame you're stripping the entire bike, just start removing parts. There's no way to explain it on a thread step by step, it'll take too long. If you have some mechanical skills and a good set of tools you should be good.

Taking things apart is the easy step, remembering how it all goes back together is the hard part.

I'm pretty sure I can have a stripped bike in about 2hrs with the proper tools. But it would take me a month to put it back together haha.

Since you already have the plastics off you can see all the major hardware and how it bolts up.
Subframe and the electrical
Rear wheel and swing arm.
Front wheel, forks and triples.
Gas tank.
Then you're pretty much left with the engine and frame.

Also find a way to support the frame/engine since front and rear stands are gonna be useless.

I was at a track-day recently where a rider in the beginner class came flying down the main straight (as beginner not overly fast) and under breaking for turn one (huge forces) the frame snapped like a twig (on the welds). Needless to say the rider went down hard. EMS spent a long time to stabilize the bloke. He was in ICU for two weeks after which I heard he did not make it. If that is a chance you wanna take its cool by me but if you doing it on a public road you are endangering others lives!
BTW, it was not a 600RR and it was a late 2k model.

So his frame was rewelded or did it snap on the factory welds?

I've had a frame snap in half. I was rear ended pretty hard though.
You don't remove the frame, you remove everything else from the frame.
