I know it's not really a mod but can anyone recommend a good brand? I've seen the oem one but wondering if there are others.
My main use is to bring my lunch to work and a couple of water bottles for longer rides. I want something that can be secured when its parked. And also not bulky.

I don't have a back pack but some of my friends do.
Some have the Ogio No Drag and it's the nicest backpack I've seen. One of them has Ogio's Hydration Reservior fitted inside.
It's extra money.
A couple others have Ogio Hydration packs. Not sure if they have the Baja 1650 or the Dakar 1950.
They carry maps, snacks and can drink water on the fly with the hydration hose. Pretty sweet really.
Even though all of these guys claim they hardly even notice the packs are there I don't have any of the systems listed above. I simply don't want things hanging on me. Instead I went for the CycleGuys Tail Bag. Keep in mind it's a bit crude.
It slips around your stock passenger seat and is expandable. Some people complain that the stitching or the material is falling apart after they kicked it a few times or stuffed it pretty good. I've had mine for two years and it's doing fine.
I mainly went with this one because if you don't put a whole lot in it it can stay fairly compressed and not stick up in the air like an eye sore.
It is not quite as nice fitting on the 600RR as the pictures show.

I have one like Tater that i use for work. Mine fits really snugly onto the seat as it is not a universal type and is meant for the CBR.
You can unzip the bag and it leaves the base on the rear seat.
Really neat and has stood up to lots of abuse and overfilling lol
Would highly recommend them to anyone :)

Got it about a year ago from a shop on ebay, but have no idea which one and cant check as they remove old puchases after 90 days, no brand marking on it, was advertised as having a gel seat pad if i remember rightly. Sorry doesnt help much.
Looking at the pics on the cycleguys.com the ones on there were quite square but mine tapers like the seat.
Went out to the garage and took some pics but photobucket mobile is playing up, once it sorts itself out i will stick them up.
I've got some Kriega stuff and it's incredible. The US20 tail bag attaches and can be removed without touching the seat - it can be attached to the metal lock assembly inside the tail, which is much better imo than attaching it to the seat itself, which isn't attached as solidly. It has a shoulder strap that can be used to change it into a messenger bag when you remove it. It can also be combined with other Kriega bags to add more storage later. The quality is excellent. The US10 might be big enough for what you'll need, but the shoulder strap is nice to have.
Kriega US-20 tail bag looks like it would be killer for a short trip. Like the OP I just want something for a water bottle and maybe a couple snacks.

I found that other pack on ebay listed under Pillion Gel Seat Tail Pack.
Probably not near the quality but for me it still looks like the best option.

You will not be disappointed if you buy it. It also has a 10-year guarantee (obviously for normal use). I'd get the US30 combo (US20 + US10) or 1 US-20 plus 2 US-10 packs if you plan on using them for travel.
I use my Kriega backpacks for general travel as well and they are great for that, too. The US-10 would probably have enough space for what you describe as cargo, but you never know when you'll want to stick more stuff in it and it doesn't have the shoulder strap included or good attachments to add a shoulder strap even if you have one.
I have cortech saddle bags and tail bag, I have had them just over a year now and am pleased with them I think the parent company is tourmaster. The get thing about them is they have a lot of room and have zipper expansions for even more I have easily packed 14 days worth or clothes and such into the bags

same here^^^ after i sold my r1 i just transfered my joe rocket tail bag to my 07 600rr! i use it for my lunch box when i work and then, week end rides will be filled with water, bread, go pro and etc..

Yeah, here are some I shot today with my phone - colors are a bit weird, but anyway.
Here's what the bag looks like mounted - note all straps are tucked away nicely around the bag or go under the seat. The bag sits nice and tight on the rear. This is the US20. The US10 can be attached on top of it with the hooks attached to some nylon loops on the lower back and the Fastex attachments on the top. Or, you could attach 2 US10s, one on either side. You could throw a US5 on top, too, but it'd start to look like a pyramid filled up.

ive got exactly the same as sponger posted,its called the pillion pack,really good bit of kit,they sell them for all sorts of models and they fit great,bike model specific,had mine over a year and good as day i bought it,got mine from ebay about £39 i think,ill try to find out for sure

1. The front and back Fastex connector straps are looped together so that if one breaks, the other will still hold and no parts will be lost. I think at least 2 would need to break at the same time to lose the bag. This also keeps the seat in place because the tight straps keep it in place (unless you lose 2 or more at once). Note the pic below where the 2 beige ones are looped together.
2. I attach the hooks facing up so that gravity is on my side in case of anything coming loose. However, the things attach so tightly that this effect is negligible.

I'm currently using the Tour Master Select tail bag. I kid you not, I use my bike to get groceries every other week. I can usually fit about 35$ of food in the tail bag and another $15 in my backpack. I highly recommend the bag, it does what it should do. It doesn't get in the way like a tank bag and it doesn't interfere with a race hump like a backpack.
I've also got reflective piping on the back of my Dainese New Delmar jacket, so I like to go without a backpack just to play it safe.
Guys I'm on the fence here to go with something like the Cortech 2.0 saddlebags, or maybe the Kriega US30. I guess I like that the Kriega can attach under the seat, like Maaku has shown, but I'm thinking the saddlebags would have a bit more room. What kind of worries me about saddle, or even saddle + tail combo is the heat from the exhaust. Anyone with the cortech saddle have issues with heat?
I've had the same type of bag like the Joe-Rocket. I bought mine a while back for $25. Its actually a tankbag but it can also mount on the tail; it uses a strap system with quick-detach buckles.
It works quite well and its pretty compact in size. It also comes with a built-in rain cover, and the front pocket is clear so you can put your phone or a map while you are riding.

You can stack one Kriega on top of the other, attaching them with the Fastex attachments, avoiding heat issues. The straps will not melt inside the tail. See this pic:
The US30 might be a little big on the back of the RR. I don't work for the company , I just really like their products.
2 US10 bags could also be strapped to the side of a US20, like this, which I'm planning to do if I make a long trip I'm dreaming of for this summer:
