OMFG - that is horrible. One guy in the post says he did the same thing and the chain took the tip off clean and he never felt it.
Well we all learn either first hand or from others mistakes.

Yikes, I sometimes lube my chain this way. I always lube from the back of the sprocket though.

Another one eh? Man... the urge to let your motor spin the wheel in 1st gear is strong, but NOT WORTH saving 5 MINUTES.
The dude looks like he'll be ok, but dang!

My roommate has half a thumb cause of that. He had a Triumph thruxton on a stand running in gear. there was a rag underneath the back wheel and thought, that would suck if that gets sucked into the bag tire, so he picked it up. guess what, it got sucked into the chain, with his thumb going with it.

That expensive hospital bill could have been avoided by buying a hundred dollar rear stand. This all kind of reminds me of what happened when I was younger and started a push mower while wearing sandals (ouch!!!)
Is it common for people to run their bike while lubing the chain? This definitely isn't the first time I've heard about such an accident. Nothing beats the one I head about the bike in gear and hopping off the rear stand while being revved :X
