Kill-Switch: on or off?

do u guys use ur kill switch?

Do u guys turn it on and then ur key... or do u guys leave the switch off and just turn ur key to turn off your bike?

I'm asking because I know several people dont use it and just use it on emergencies... And i know that on the MSF course we were instructed to do this as a procedure.

I just want to get everyones opinions on this...

i never use the kill switch. no reason to except for emergencies.

Nope... its a bit to notorious for breaking down to be using it continuously so I just use the ignition....

Seen too many threads on here about dead kill switches. Always set to run. I just use the ignition.

as above - my instructor told me never to touch it as you would either 1)forget it was off and not be able to start the bike or b) just break it as its an emergency switch and not intended for every day use....

On MSF course do you remember why you were instructed to use it? So you can stop the engine while keeping both hands on the handle bars.

Same here heard only bad things about using the kill switch all the time to turn the bike off. i use the ignition. not to say i`v never used it, i have done it a couple of times and like mentioned above i forgot about it when i got back on. i actually posted in the troubleshooting section looking for a cure to my bike troubles...... then realized my kill switch was on!

I never use the kill switch... the only reason I can see for using the kill switch on a regular basis is because you would be able to hit it a lot faster in the event of an emergency. I'm pretty sure I would have to look down to even know where to put my thumb.

Here's the best reason to not use the kill switch on a 600rr: on page 36 of the owners manual it says that it's for emergency use and should always be left in the run position, even when the engine is off. On page 35 it says that the ignition switch is what's used for stopping the engine. On page 56 it specifically says to stop the engine with the ignition switch and not the kill switch for normal engine stop procedures. I didn't make the bike, Honda did. I'll just listen to them.

I NEVER use it. I have it taped on. The noob mechanic that inspected my bike turned it off when he was done expecting my bike and I couldn't get it started after that. Had to have a buddy get my truck and pick me up. Most of them have electrical issues so I wouldn't recommend using yours. Use the key only.

Anyone know of an actual fix? Like an aftermarket switch that works flawlessly?

Some people use the RC51 kill switch... but about the best method is simply to reduce the current going through the kill switch by making it activate a relay (which takes most of the current). Once there is bugger all current going through it there will be almost no arcing and therefore almost no wear.

I use it all the time. Was shown to use it in the MSF class. It's all part of my ritual of starting and stopping the engine.

I always use the ignition. I don't know why you would HAVE to have both hands on while stopped. Might as well just turn the ignition...

I actually read my manual and never use the switch because Honda says it is for emergencies only. No real reason for using it anyway.

Using the kill switch as your main way of turning off the bike isn't necessarily a bad thing... at least come emergency time your in the habit of using it...
Only problem is their tendency to cark it...

I've always used the kill switch. Not only on my 09 RR but my 04 F4i, my ninja, my katana....

Maybe it's a habit from dirtbike riding. I never heard anything negative about it from my MSF instructors, and have never had an issue with it.

But, the owners manual does basically say not to use the kill switch, but to use the ignition in normal situations...so I'd say listen to the owners manual.

mainly use ignition, but when i do use kill; its a habit now to put it back to run! although there has been the odd "wtf why wont my bike start?" :P

I was gonna say the owners manual says to use the key, so, that's what I do. Besides, you can save a few seconds of battery life by not having the lights on w/ the engine off, lol.

I just put the kickstand down in 1st gear to kill the engine, then I turn the key.

Used the kill switch for a while when I f'ed up my kickstand sensor though.

Never use mine. The only reason to use a killswitch is if you wrecked your bike and the throttle was stuck open spinning the back tire - to shut in down, I say emergency only.

i tend to use the kickstand sensor as well to shut the engine off while it's in first.
