Dude please help. Sheared caliper nipple

Hey everybody. It is 230 AM and I cannot sleep. I got my speed bleeders in the mail today. They are awesome. Bled my brakes in like 20 minutes. But when I retightened the front right caliper nipple, I sheared off the head of the nipple. There isn't fluid leaking everywhere which is good. But I am really freaking out. This is my first bike (it's an 07) and my baby and now I am freaking out that I ****ed it up. You know that feeling when your 8 years old and you come down the stairs on Christmas morning and there's a bunch of cool s***? Imagine if instead you came down and Stephen King's IT was eating your little sister while Santa raped your Dad. That's how I feel. I have no idea what to do here. I tried drilling it out but it didn't seem very effective. Please help...

Sorry to hear man. We have all been there trying to wrestle with our bikes late at night. It would make it much easier if you posted pictures of the problem. Or better shoot a video and upload it on photobucket and post it on here. Works can only say so much, but a picture is worth a thousand words, and a video is work a million. Call it a night, crack open a beer- or take a few shots of Jack- and call it a night, sleep on it, make the video/picture tomorrow and re-post, you'll have a solution in no time at all. Good luck man and sorry your project didn't go as smoothly as anticipated.

sounds like you are going to have to EZ-out the bleeder our and install a new one.

if you were not using the correct wrenches i would suggest investing in some.

not for nothing you dont need to use line wrenches on your bleeders...the line wrench is designed only to prevent you from rounding the heads on brakes lines that you cant fit a socket on..in this case you can use a 8mm socket to brake it loose so not to round the nut...2nd their not installed that tight to begin with... any normal wrench is fine sounds like he over tightened them...

you biggest problem is going to be able to drill out that bleeder screw. 2nd problem is your may get little metal shaving inside the caliper which is not good... if you dont have the know how with this problem i would recommend taking it to a shop and let them do it... last resort is your going to have to buy a caliper..since you broke it off while tighten it.. their not going to leak but piece of mind you wanna get the bleeder out

I'll go ahead and say it since no one else will. If you don't have a good enough grasp of wrenching to keep from shearing the head off of bleeder bolt....drilling your caliper yourself is only going to end up in tears. Sounds like you already started. If you haven't buggered the caliper up already, just put some vice grips on your brake line (if they are still rubber only) to keep fluid from pissing everywhere. Remove the caliper and take it to a shop for help. It won't cost much. **** happens, next time use very light torque on those guys.

I'd be checking the flea market for a used caliper. Question, are your brakes OK? If so, and it ain't leaking, ride that thing!

Hey guys. Thanks for the words of encouragement. As stated above, it was a bad feeling. I'm sure everyone's been there and made a dumb mistake on their bike before. I am very fortunate however. Maybe it's because it was Easter weekend, but I called around to all the local brake shops on Monday, and they all said the same s***. Replace the caliper, blah blah blah. But finally, this one brake place said they couldn't help me but they knew someone who could. It was a local machinist who had 2 sons in Afghanistan. I spoke with him briefly and told him I was there 10-11. He called me later on Monday morning and said it was ready! I asked how much I owed him, and he said not a thing. So boy have I learned my lesson. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN ANY SCREW, NUT, OR BOLT. And especially your caliper nipple. But seriously everybody, I really do recommend the speed bleeders from Sport Bike Track Gear. They're on sale from 15 to 8 bucks right now. And you can get the speed bleeder kit with the bags and hoses. I would recommend it. Once I re-installed my caliper, I bled my brakes out and was done in only a few minutes! I am happy as hell that it didn't end up as badly as it could have. :)

When it comes to brakes, lesson is that you shouldn't over tighten your bleeders...

You also shouldn't take a drill or ezyout anywhere near them... that's just a good way to ensure you need to buy a new calliper.

The only thing you should do to remove a broken bleeder is take a small screwdriver that is only just larger than the diameter of the hole in the centre, bang it lightly with a hammer to create a bit of a grove for the screwdriver to sit in and then turn. If it doesn't work the first time give up and take it to the professionals.

Even if you damage the thread it isn't the end of the world, specialised brake shops can drill out the old bleeder and use a special helicoil to replace the thread and seat essentially bringing it right back to brand new.

hey everybody. please learn from my mistake. i looked it up in the service manual and got the torque values for all the bolt for the front brake caliper and the caliper nipples for both front and rear. With a deep 8 mm socket, you should be able to tighten your nipples with your torque wrench.

Front caliper nipples: 5.9 ft-lbs
Rear caliper nipple: 4.4 ft-lbs
Front brake caliper mounting bolts (the two bolts that hold the calper on the fork): 33 ft-lbs
Front brake oil bolt (bolt that holds the brake line to the front caliper- sits between 2 caliper mounting bolts): 25 ft-lbs
Again, please learn from my mistake. :)

WOW... WOW... how much drama in this thread? I broke my rear speedbleeder last week from over torquing. Went down to Ace Hardware, bought myself an Easy Out Drill Bit kit. Stuck the proper size bit inside the bleeder hole, used a wrench on the drill bit to take out the bleeder screw, put in my stock bleeder, bled the brake to get all (if any) metal shavings off, job done.

I'm surprised so many people here suggested a "new" caliper.
