I just ordered a pair of 09+ monoblock calipers to replace my stock (07) calipers. I'm curious how you're supposed to service these things. Especially since I don't have compressed air to work with. How do you get the the pistons out and get to the seals and whatnot? I did a bit of searching but couldn't find anything - if I missed something, hook me up with a link.
If you don't have access to compressed air, hook them up to a brake line and use the brake fluid to pump them pistons out. The tricky part is going to be getting them all out far enough where you can move them with your fingers. Maybe take out one piston at a time, clean, replace, then take out another piston?
Easiest way by far is to make friends with someone with the right tools. Professional mechanic, guy in a garage down the street, whatever.
Im trying to rebuild my 09 600rr calipers due to one of the pistons is not moving freely when squeezing on lever... I can not figure out a way to removed the pistons and replace the seals... Any DIY guides? or have any advice?
If you have an air gun, stick a piece of plywood in between the pistons like the rotor would sit. Put the air gun where the banjo bolt goes and let the air do the work by pushing out the pistons.
Hmmm sounds like i can work with that... But curious as to how far to let the pistons come out? do I remove the pads and do this or do it with pads on? could i remove the pistons entirely to replace the seals and completely clean out the grime and dirt off the pistons?
You're going to have to do this on a work bench with the pads removed. The air should push the pistons out entirely. It's the only way to get to/replace the seals. After that, follow the advice posted above for cleaning the caliper and pistons out entirely. Then rebuild.
