This forum needs a place for the headbangers, shredders and special musicians!
Saw an EDM thread and came across some interesting posts here and there and figured we probably have enough to start and protect our heavy metal territory.
I hereby declare Inkslinger VP of thread operations.
Stuff you might want to post on here:
Went to a concert? Let us know how much of your hair got pulled out in the pit.
Practicing a song you can't quite get? Say you suck and ask for tips.
Heard a song but can't quite find out what the title/artist is? Just ask.
Don't like the musical direction of a favorite band? Vent and discuss.
Been/Are in a band and want to vent some? Go for it.
You get the idea.
WARNING: any mention of a non metal band in this thread will result in your decapitation...........jk.

Let's get this rolling. Background on me I started early at the age of four with my grandfathers guitar and learned a lot of folk songs. While at the same time my dad had an eclectic taste in music to say the least with maiden, Sabbath, who, sex pistols, skynyrd, all the way to johnny cash and merle haggard on constant rotation. I fell in love with maiden very quickly. Then I progressed to classical training at 8 andpicked up bass around the same time while dabbling In drums also.
In high school I was in several mediocre garage bands that was more focused on other things lol we played local parties and such. We in all honesty were getting fairly decent(I was back and forth bass and lead guitar) untill our drummer and friends passed away in a car accident. I laid it down for few years.
Now I've been playing for fun more at my cousins house who has become obsessed with drums:). These guys are a little more focused on the who and soundgarden and such but oh well I still get to play lol.
Metal till I die:)

That is awesome about your son, will Gaige be the next Alex Skolnick?
Great idea; backgroud on me will follow but first I have to say it was Maiden that did it for me as well, they pulled me into the metal world teeth first and I never wanted out!
I started listening to Linkin Park became a big fan and then started shifting to System of a Down......not bad considering their genre....I enjoyed their music and that is what inspired me to take up guitar. I then heard Blood Brothers by Maiden and was in awe after listening to it; put it on repeat for an entire day and became hooked! Unfortunately this happened when I was 20, earlier would have been better but whatever. I then started learning Maiden songs.
I progressed to thrash (Metallica, Megadeth, Kreator) Iced Earth is also a big influence and when I heard Testament I fell in love with their entire musical package; definitely my favorite thrash band. Met some guys, started a thrash band, played lead guitar all the way through, but then had to go our own separate ways.
I do enjoy symphonic stuff as well every now and then like 'Tarja era' Nightwish. The heaviest music I got to was Melodic death metal; C.O.B and In Flames are favorites.
I was blown away by a band that just seriously sent me into muscial bliss with their perfect mix of heavy and melodic capabilities on all instruments. Unfortunately these guys aren't as well known as other bands out there but they deserve much more appreciation than they are getting. Once we conclude with the bio/backgrounds we can start our favorite underappreciated bands list.
Great to see wrathsrr is here.
Too bad Youtube doesn't work at work, LiveLeak will have to do.

My daughter (3 years old) was dancing today and head banged a little to Sublime, it's about the heaviest she likes. So I switch over to some Killswitch and she becomes a one girl circle pit. Running, punching, and stomping in a good circle. Shes obviously never seen a pit so this was pf course an amazing sight to me although I did laugh alot.
Next up All That Remains comes in and she screams "louder!"...
Then her inner princess returns. As shes jumping up and down, she begins saying "hop like a bunny. Hop like a bunny."
Love metal, love shows, love metal... and love metal.
Really pissed it took so long for Randy Blythe (Lamb of God) to get released from the Chech jail, resulting in my concert tickets getting cancelled! No Metalocalypse, Gojira of LoG! :(

Agreed. Truth is they are one of the most energetic shows I've been to in a long time... seen there progression, about 5 shows. What I like is when they come here it's at the Hard Rock, so it's a nice 'relatively' small venue... I hate ampitheatre shows and refuse to go.
Had tickets to the Madison Sq Garden Rammstein show (was going to be the exception to the rule), but ended up not making the trip. Then they ended up doing a full tour here, and completely zoned out on it.
Speaking of 'fun' shows, if not the best band... GWAR.

I went to Will Rock fest in WI last weekend and was most interested in Static-x, ATR and most importantly one of my faves, FEAR FACTORY! In July I went to Mayhem for SLAYER (!!), Anthrax and Motorhead. July 5th was Iron Maiden and I was in the pit, gotta be one of the top shows I've ever had the priviledge of seeing. Back in May saw Fear Factory and Shadows Fall at a small venue in Chicago called the Bottom Lounge, which was cool because it's my pre-Blackhawks game hangout. Back in Jan I traveled to Indy to see Anthrax, Testament and Death Angel which is a tour I will see again next month at my favorite venue in the world the Vic Theater in Chicago!
Wife loves Rammstein and was hoping to get her down to the Detroit show... but we couldn't make it either. Buddy of mine went and seen Gwar.. he walked into a convience store afterwards and the group he was with looked like they survived a massacre..lol He said the looks were priceless.
Taking my 12 yr old son to his first show last fall was a pretty good high.
FFDP, ATR, Hatebreed and Rains. The look he had on his face as each band come out was cool. His fav is ATR and it was a early xmas surprise.

I love my little princess
That is just beautiful, got a special lady there
Glad to see things are taking off in here.
Maiden in Melbourne was my first ever show and seeing my favorite band of all time was just priceless, they always always put on a great show.
My bands to see before I die list:
Testament
Megadeth
Metallica
Scar Symmetry
Slipknot
In Flames
Children of Bodom
Kamelot (actually since Roy left, I am pissed off as hell)
Kreator
Lacuna Coil

My pit days are over, I just stand on the sidelines, drink in hand, enjoying the show.
Bands I enjoy:
August burns red
As I lay dying
Misery signals
3 inches of blood
Bleeding thru
The haunted
I think it'd be hard to recount every band I've seen live, but it's been quite a few. Some were great shows, some I got kicked out of... how can you 'not' want to mosh during Blessing upon thy throne of tyranny (Dimmu Borgir)? Hard rock sucks about that sometimes... though during other shows they simply can't hold it back.

Wow Wrath, that is one hell of a list. Now just when I was about to pull that rusty blade out of the drawer, I realized your true appreciation for Iron Maiden......which saves you in my book. About Pink Floyd; you have to watch David Gilmour on the guitar if you have any respect for music or the guitar for that matter, so I commend you on yor list, 95% of which I hope(d) to see one day.
I can't hold it in any longer, my favorite and most under-appreciated band in my opinion is Scar Symmetry. If you haven't heard them before, I give you:

Ran across this video on YouTube. I've listened to them (Dir en grey) but never saw videos. It is pretty um,..interesting. watch discuss:
" Some education: the use of the birth control pill has been illegal by law in Japan up until 1999. This law resulted in absolutely horrifying amounts of abortions in the country. And still, the abortion rates are quite high. DIR EN GREY have made several songs showing their opinion of this. Even before the pill was legalized. In that way, they did not only try to make people aware, but also criticised the government. I say, whatever means they find necessary to get the point across. Respect."

Haha I went on a rant about this in another thread about the reason a lot of our favorite bands are under apreciated is because of this mentality that makes metal the most elitist driven genre of music out there. In order to get our point across that our favorite is amazing we tend to trash other bands in the process, and where does that get us.
I don't know if I agree with you 100%. I'm a fan of almost all metal. While I agree Slipknot may not be the most technical band out they still put on a hell of a show. All bands have their place. Some put on a good show and some have technical skill that is truly amazing.

I got ya, it's really annoying when someone goes oh metal yeah I like slipnot too or rammstein. I was listening to the new Opeth in my garage the other day and someone overheard and asked what it was, so I told them and they said what is that like hair metal?

I dont understand what your trying to say. You dont consider Rammstein or Slipknot to be metal?
Metal to me is just a grouped generalization.
There's too many kinds I listen to, to be specific.
Speed, death, black, industrial just to name a few.
I just call it metal, man. And I dont consider it crap. I dont pass judgement on what others listen to. Everyones tastes are different.
