First wreck, pretty life changing, give up riding?
Well, after only riding for 5 months, Monday, 9/10, a cager turned left in front of me causing me to front flip over their hood and break 2 vertebrae in my lower back. Can't feel my feet or move my legs. After 6mos to a year of rehab, I should go back to normal walking. Had surgery and have 2 giant titanium rods connecting 5 verts together. My thoughts qre, should I give up riding after/if I heal up fine? Have 1 lil girl 2yrs 7 mos and a lil baby boy due in 29 days. Hopefully, I will be there when he is born. Thanks for any input. Ride safe guys!

Man I'm sorry to hear about your bad luck. But honestly that's a decision you'll have to make with yourself and you family. I personally wont give up riding until I'm physically unable to ride. On a side note there been people riding for 10+ years and never went down. You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Anyways I hope you heal up and recover quickly!
No one can answer that but you! Hope you heal up and recover FAST!!!! Good luck!!!
IMO, I wouldn't ride on the street anymore, not that you can't or won't get hurt on the track, but controlled situations tend to at least give you a fighting chance.
Good luck and heal fast!

sorry to hear all that man...i hope you have a full speedy recovery
about the not riding anymore i have a friend who wrecked pretty bad a few years agoand was in a wheel chair for almost a year...he decided to give up riding for a while and last year bought a bike again and is happy to be back out riding...thats still your final decidion though
Do what you want to do, if that's hoping on a bike again then do it. Don't let the injury stop you from doing what you want. The human body and our will power is the strongest tool you have. You can do anything you put your mind to. Sorry to hear about your accident and I wish you a speedy recovery. Best of luck dude.

Guess which one sees more ride time each summer?....
first off I would like to say glad to hear you are ok for the most part. All things considering you are lucky to be here. As for your question about riding, truthfully in the end that all falls on your shoulders buddy, you are the only person who can answer that and believe it.
We can only offer our opinions, me personally what ever doesn't kill you makes you stronger. But in the end bro it's your call. But as other have said don't let one mistake ruin what you want to do.
You make those decisions with your wife but I know that I am new and have been down and I was riding the following weekend, bandages and all. I understand your situation is much more serious but if you really have the urge to ride then that is what you will find a way to do.
Heal fast and strong and I am sure you will be alright...

In regards to your decision you have a year to think about it. Its a important decision that only you can make. That is a risk everyone takes when they choose to endure this sport.
Heal well!

First, at least you are alive! Injuries can heal, losing your life never does.
Now, I wrecked my first bike almost 2 years ago next month, done douche purposely ran me off the road, I ended up going end over end into a 10 ft ditch with no helmet. Luckily I was able to walk away, sore, but still walking. I contemplated the same question you are. But after about 8 months I realized how much I missed riding, so I started again and never looked back. I will admit I was nervous, even just cruising my neighborhood, but eventually that went away. The problem is not us riders, its the a**holes that don't pay attention or don't care that we will die if we hit them cause we don't have 1000lbs of steel to protect us. So ultimately its gonna be a decision you will have to make when the time comes. Good luck and a fast recovery. And congrats on your son!

Glad you are ok. Id put the bike down until you are at least fully healed. Not sure what the doctor told you, but when I broke my neck it was 2 years total heal time (mainly b/c a cadaber bone) If you do go back, Id prob get one of those spine and neck protectors.
wow thats not good man and I am sorry to hear that...I would say you need to think about your children serious...I wouldnt be able to give up riding but I think I would stick to the track or maybe only a nice sport tour ride on the weekend every once in awhile. i would include you wife to that decision...that could only help the tension the accident may have caused
You have much more than yourself to be alive for. If I were in your shoes, I'd turn over the keys. You are lucky to be alive, and you will be lucky to be walking again. When you heal up, enjoy your kids...
I'm sorry to hear about your misfortune, but glad you're ok.
I don't think now is the time to make this type of a decision. You're surely shaken up (who wouldn't be). Take your time to heal and rehabilitate, then decide. Best wishes.
Get well soon Man and don't worry u will ride again I fallen 4 times and every time I say the same thing that I'm not gonna ride any more but it's a passion man u will see
i would quit... just to be considerate to youre wife now that she has experienced a loved one going down and in your case pretty bad. It would prob bring up so many arguments thats not even worth it. If somehow you can relieve the anxiety youre wife may be having about not having a father figure for her children in the future... then ride on! but i doubt that is possible. You need to focus on recovering and your fam... not on your desire on riding
I had the exact same surgery for 3 broken vertibre in my lower back because a drunk driver pulled out in front of my mustang. Swerved to miss him and ended up head on into a tree. I have the same titanium rods as you. I had a 07 R1 at the time and the docs told me the same thing they told you. I had no feeling from my waist down and had to do all the rehab stuff. Being honest with you the rehab will be the hardest part. So I sold my bike and said whats the point in keeping it if I can't use it? After all that I said I would never ride a bike again for fear of crashing and hurting my back even more but it's hard to give up riding a motorcycle. Just something about it makes you feel free when riding. I just recently started riding again after about 5 years. Concentrate on getting your life back together first, as others have said motorcycles aren't going anywhere anytime soon so if you get the urge to ride again just get another bike like i did.
glad u r ok and hope u will heal fast, give riding a break, stay with your wife and help her out with the new born and after a year or so you are gna know and feel whether or not u wana ride again
My thoughts qre, should I give up riding after/if I heal up fine?
No but you should TAKE UP the past time of 'Cager Bashing' it's just in the idea stage but I think I will get this to take off basically any wrong doings by cagers even small, beat them up, or get somebody else to help do so, preferably we start to catch these idiots at the start of their retardation so they are not further affected by the retardation gene...anyway let me know your thoughs

I disagree whole-heartedly with this approach to life, so if somebody boiled the kettle and didn't tell you and you touched it, is that making tea all over for you for the rest of your life? If you're in the shed and you hit your thumb with a hammer(it hurts) is that using hammers over for the rest of your life? If somebody else has caused you a problem thats no reason to give it up, it's their fault they must pay....in some way or another
on the other hand, if your an idiot and things in life are always your own fault i would consider giving what your doing up it's not for you haha
damn sorry to hear bro, heal up, and keep thinking about it, talk with your lady on it and your kid, yeah she is young, but she will still add some insight, even without words,
I have 3 kids, all pretty young, nothing over 8, and I ride and they ride, I take my 8 year old with me on my RR,
for now it may be best to stop riding and concentrate on haling and being there for your little one,
I know for the first few years they were born I spent more time with them than riding, shoot I still do that, hahahha,
My first wreck was life changing for me also so I do feel where your coming from.
I also thought about giving up on riding but after I was all healed up I made myself jump back on her.
2 wrecks later im still riding
Just give it time and see how you feel, I didnt ride until all my bones were healed. It takes some time but be patient and see how you feel after you get through the worst.

so if the hand that got burnt is the op... the kettle is riding... then what is the wife and kids? nice analogy there mate.. try again.. haha not even gonna bother with the shed one lol.
all im saying is if his wife agrees with it for him to start riding... then go for it..
Tyrone, sorry to hear the bad news. I'm probably parroting your spinal surgeon here by saying that you're lucky it isn't worse (ie higher up the spine or definite spinal cord transection) and next time you may not be so lucky. As mentioned already, take your time and forget about riding for a while, focus on your rehab and family.
