This is one of the coolest riding related innovations in some time! Read the article carefully there is more inside than the title really shares. Even overzealous riders, which I am sure of all us have and will be at some point, will reduce their probability of eating asphalt cookies should this be implemented. Too bad it will probably take ages for it to pass red tape and be eventually installed.
Until then keep your eyes GLOWPEN!
Article for lazies:
Glow in the dark roads will become reality in an area of southern Holland next year, following interest from the country’s biggest road builder in a group of Dutch artists’ special luminous paint.
The stretch of road to be used as the experimental test bed will have lanes and carriageway extremes marked out with glowing paint.
There will also be a reactive covering for the tarmac that reveals snowflake graphics when the temperature drops below a given point, warning motorists of danger from a lower grip surface, possibly involving ice.
The concept was created through Dutch Studio Roosegaarde in response to budget cuts that meant local councils were turning off streetlights in a bid to save money.
Speaking to PistonHeads, head of the group’s technical department Peter De Man commented, “How many more traffic injuries will there be because of the light turn-off? Essentially, how much is a person’s life worth?
“We as artists don’t agree with that, so we wanted to do something positive.”
Carriageway constructor Heijmans got involved with the project and is now experimenting with the paint to ensure it remains glowing for as long as the longest hours of darkness recorded in northern Europe – that and testing that the paint doesn’t come off, of course.
The glow in the dark covering needs to last between five and 10 years and works through absorbing the sunlight, charging the special compound in the paint and releasing a luminescent glow during the night. The concept is similar to glow in the dark markings on some wristwatches for example.
Given the UK is subject to the same streetlight switch off, the paint could theoretically find its way on to the nation’s roads.
A recent survey by Halfords showed 26 of England’s 27 county councils have flicked the switch on their region’s streetlamps, some being turned off as early as 8pm, with darkness lasting until 5.30am.

Socialism has gotten so bad in Europe that they have to turn off streetlamps? LOL
Anyhow, that looks neat. But I'd want to see it in real life. Any "Artists rendering" can look promising, but reality can differ quite a bit.
how does saving money become a solcialisim statement?
for the record, many flailing states / cities, in the US are also turning off street lights to save a few dollars.

This is a pretty good idea, I always wondered how much you could save if you turned off street lights.
Would also be cool if you attached sensors to them which lit the lamp up when they noticed you approaching and then turned off when you passed.
street lights are generally hard to start, and do not support rapid on / off

I live out in the country where our long ass driveway is lit by what most would consider a street light. Costs 47 cents for the year lol. Don't know how relevant it is to anything else, but thought I'd throw it out there. I'd honestly have it shut off for good, but we're required to have it for some reason.
Only issue is glow materials fade so fast unless your spend good money on tridium type stuff which is crazy expensive...
I think we just need like in irobot everyone is on a grid then there will be no issues at all on roads... But who's going to be the one to jump on it first I would if I had the knowlege

Failing states/cities went down the socialist path too. Look at the budget of your local town. Huge swaths of money are cut out for pensions for public workers who did 20 years on the government dole (construction, police, fire, etc) and now live another 4 years collection those pensions, plus entitlements for people completely unrelated to work.
...and I say this as a veteran who is currently reeping in stacks of GI Bill benefits. I do have a skin in this game.
Anyway, I just thought it was comical that Europeans have to turn off street lamps due to budget cuts. (Spain hit 25% unemployment last week - equal to what the U.S. was at during the great depression!)
with all thos hype, you would think they should now have heated roads up north!! especially in Alaska... come on.. heated roadss...shoot now i can ride!! yippey

I dont see the major point to be honest. Streetlights are there to help see obstructions like an animal about to cross the road or that big ass pot hole coming up quick. This just makes the lines glow which bright yellow paint does anyways when your headlights hit it.
