swingarm removal

well i was 90% sure there wasnt a write up on swingarm removal since i couldnt find it back when i took my first one off but of coarse i was wrong. but since i took so much time taking pics and uploading them im making a writeup anyways. tripages writeups great, i just have a few more pics incase someone is still unsure. so ill keep things fairly brief. i have no fairings on my bike, or exhaust or rearsets and the rear tire, chain, sprockets already been removed. so to tackle the swing arm. first off that i do a little different instead of the jack under the oil pan is i have 2 wratchet straps hooked around my raftors and hooked in the exhaust mount holes on the sub frame.

first thing i unbolted was the upper shock mount. i used a 17 mm socket.

next remove the bottom bolt on the dog bone closest to the back.



next i removed the pinch bolts on the left and right sides.


heres a cheap way to remove your axel bolt if you dont have the right tools which i hear alot of in threads. i got a bolt that fits in the axel hole then i welded a few nuts on the other end of the bolt. then you can put on a wratchet and remove it. its not pretty but works like a charm. remove it from the brake side of the bike

next tap through the axel bolt with an extension or something like it.

now the swingarm should pull out off the bike with ease.


now the bike can sway back and forth since its hanging so i just put a straight bar through where i took the axel bolt off and put a jack stand on both sides. i still have 95% of the weight hanging. more or less just to keep it sturdy

heres what your left with. i already previously cut my chain so its the only dif between mine and yours.

next i removed the dog bone. it was the tightest for me so i needed some leverage.

once you unbolt the lower shock bolt pull the shock up through the swingarm and remove the dog bone and the chain guide and the 2 chain adjusters and the stand spools and it should be bare.

i run my last swingarm through with the bearings and they looked and felt fine but they should be cleaned since the swingarm is sandblasted.
heres the removed parts. i tape and label all my parts so im not stuck looking sine it might be a while before reinstallation.

cheers. hope this made things clear. any questions let me know. theres lots of different ways to do it but this went very well for me and only took about a half hour taking pics and all.

So where can I find something for a newb?? :) Something from the beginning, with everything still installed. I can take the fairings off, but other then that, I'm lost. Never adjusted a chain, let alone removed it or the rear tire.

What is the bolt that your made a special tool for? It's not an axle bolt, because, that's not your axle. What is the real tool called? I don't know how to weld but I need to get something to work.

Good write up man, only advice i have is to break loose all the bolts in the linkage first
while the swingarm is still on the bike. Easier to get good leverage. Also, if you're going to leave the bearings in get some washers and bolts to cap them off. That way you
don't get any sand in the bearings at all. I would trash any bearing that got that fine
shiz in it, just not worth snapping your swingarm off. New bearings and dust seals cost
only 70 bucks at the dealer.

Can anyone tell me what size allen head I would need for this, its bigger then a 10 or 12 isn't it?

Tried this and I'm thinking that the bolt was overheated as it snaped in half pretty easy. I have up to a 10 mm hex allen and its much bigger so I started seaching and found this set.

not sure the size but it shouldnt be that difficult. just go out and buy a few bolts til you get it right and put 2 nuts on it and twist it off. shouldnt be difficult

wow nice write up. i will use this.

i thought i needed something called a castle socket for this swingarm removal but if I dont then you just saved me about 45$

good to know, another thread said a 19mm worked for them. perhaps the sizes have changed over the years, he was working on an 04 I believe. When I went out to try the 19mm hex nuts it was too large.

It was a 17mm on my 06. I'll check my 03 service manual later, but I'm pretty sure it'll be the same.

sorry fellas. i swing by the site every few months cause i usually have a pm or to with questions and i had cleaned up my photobucket and forgot it would mess up the thread. seeing how poeple like the writeup ill keep her going. ive sold my rr almost 2 years ago and am on a newer r1 now but i owe the site and all the good guys on here. cheers

yeah i know this is an old post sorry to bump it, but for all the other people searching out there, its a 17mm, on the clutch side and a 19mm on the brake side (a least as per my 05)(the swing-arm pivot bolt)

As of my experiance tonight I can verify and back this. 05, 17mm shifter side, 19mm brake side.
