Need help.

I flushed my front brakes this evening and after everything was done, I noticed a teeny bit of brake fluid just around the bleed valve on the right caliper only. I removed the rubber cover, checked and re-checked tightness of the nut and all is correct, but the fluid continues to seep.

Every few minutes I dab the area, I get a teeny bit of fluid on the towel. This is not good.

I noticed something odd even before this, during the flush and only on this right side caliper. Even when the valve was closed, fluid and bubbles would still be coming out of the valve and into the hose.

I have no idea where to begin. Any ideas? See pics below.

From Ron Ayers' exploded diagram of the brake caliper, it seems like the bleed valve is just a bleed screw I can replace for $1.17.

I think I'll try that first. If not, it may be something up with the caliper.

Do I have to drain all my fluid before pulling this screw out? I'm guessing so.

I replaced the screw today, using your instructions. Thanks Pete!

After an evening ride, I found fluid again!! It's just a tiny bit, but it's enough to be a problem (if fluid is coming out, air is for sure going in). Brake lever is firm and brakes work fine for now.

So, a new screw did not fix the leak.

I'm thinking I'll put some teflon tape (thread sealing tape) in the threads for now as a temporary fix. Anyone know whether it's ok to use with brake fluid touching the tape?

Unfortunately, I am about 2 months out of warranty.

Can you look at this diagram again? CLICK

Part number 4 in the diagram looks like some kind of seal. Could that have anything to do with the bleed screw?

no.

That seal is to let the brake fluid flow between the 2 half's of the caliper.
You have 2 choices.
1. Speak to a vender / shop who 'may' be able to order you a larger dia bleed valve. You would then drill & tap yours to fit. This can be done & is fairly easy.

2. Get a new caliper.

Gotcha. I think my realistic option is number 2. It sounds like something is defective inside or the threads are damaged, even though I've never over-torqued and and it feels just fine when I tighten it down.

I've noticed the same with the calipers on my 05 model - I have got some aftermarket bleed nipples to try and see if that fixes the problem but i've had the bike 3 years now and though it's not right it's not actually caused any problems with the brakes.

I guess it's a slight mis-match in the surfaces where the end of the bleed nipple mates inside the caliper.

This could be it. I'm going to take a look at the old bleed screw when I get home and see if I spot any deformation at the mating surface.

i used teflon tape to seal mine better, u just use a tiny bit, and only on the threads.
fixed my problem.

its the calipers that are the problem, not the nipple.

Hmm, did you have the same problem?

I wonder if our calipers are damaged.

likw mx rider i used teflon tape. it will fix your problem

and no, the calipers are not the problem

good luck.

also...just use a little tape.

i dont know man^, i tried another one i had, and it was the same.
i think its the nipple hole, or just the threads got stretched a hare.

The problem is that it's unsealed metric threads. They should have made it NPT threaded.

Teflon tape works just watch it - If you find a set of Speed Bleeders they usually come with a thread sealer applied to the bleeder screw...guess why....

Here's the problem with Teflon tape: the threads don't seal the system, the tapered pointy end of the bleed screw and the seat inside the caliper do. If those two aren't mating correctly, you will have a leak. This is what I was taught yesterday.

So I drained the fluid, removed the screw, cleaned the screw then took a q-tip dipped in brake fluid and cleaned the seat in the caliper. Picked up a pretty obvious speck of dirt.

Put everything back together, re-bled and NO LEAK.

You guys might want to give this a try. Thanks to everyone who helped and contributed!
