So my bike has been outside in the rain for about 2 weeks since I last rode it.

Today as I was going for a ride it fired right up but died within 20 sec of idling. Then it started again but only ran for a second. Now nothing, cranks over and coughs but won't start.

Battery shows 12.5V (less than a year old), cleaned the ground terminal, fuel relay ticks, fuel pump turns on, all power seems okay.

Seems like it's not getting fuel but almost full tank of gas.

If it was a bad spark plug or coil, it would still on at least a couple cylinders?

Don't have a garage so can't do much until I get it towed to my parents... but would really like to avoid that.

Could this be due to my aftermarket fuel cap leaking water into the tank? Hardly enough I'd say. Help?

it's probably flooded. was it cold when you started it?

hold the throttle wide open and see if it will try to catch and stumble when you crank it (WOT will shut off the fuel), let it stumble a few times then try to start it normally.

Was cold, air temp around +8C
Did nothing, isn't stumbling anymore just tries to dry crank.

so you cranked it with the throttle WOT and it didn't try to catch?

and when you crank it normally can you smell fuel out the exhaust?


maybe try bump starting it if you have a hill or a friend nearby. the starter really doesn't turn the motor very quickly. bump start in 2nd gear.

No fuel smell, and yes WOT several attempts.
Even tried bump starting but not even a cough... leaning towards a bad fuel pump :crying:

if the fuel pump is priming it's unlikely that it's bad (if the flow is poor, it will cause high end problems, not idle problems)


i'd lean towards draining the tank and putting known good fuel in, it could be a water issue.

Did you check your battery voltage after trying to WOT start? When WOT starting, fully engage the throttle, and hold your starter for 5 seconds. Release and wait 10 seconds, then do it again. Do this a few times. Then check your battery voltage.

You might have a bad battery, but I agree with wibbly, aftermarket fuel cap, 2 weeks outside in the rain - maybe bad gas. I'd confirm your battery before emptying your tank.

Did my fuel pump last year. Got two pumps off ebay from used bikes that work great.

12.5v is too low to run these bikes properly. I just went through the exact same thing on my '04. I left the alarm on but my trickle charger wasn't connected good through the barrel plug. I thought it was a fuel issue also until I checked battery voltage.

Charge the battery to 12.8v or higher and see if it doesn't solve your problem.

So I found the problem...



that's a bit over 0.5 liters of water on the bottom. Drained the tank with a hand pump, got everything out and charging the battery as we speak. Will let it charge over night and fuel up fresh 98 octane fuel and have a go at starting it.

A warning from my experience, do NOT use cheap chinese fuel caps if you plan on having it outside! The cap was clearly leaking and at times I could even smell gas from around the bike, most likely gas fumes escaping through the cap.

Wow that's really shitty. At least you found your issue.

12.5v is tons to start your bike. Resting voltage isn't really relevant. When you are cranking the voltage will pull down to around 9, and the bike will still start fine.

If it'll run the starter it'll run the bike. I've never seen a case where a bike would crank strong and not catch due to a battery.

If your charging system is healthy it won't be a problem. Though it never hurts to top up the battery with a plug in charger after many many cranking attempts.

Thanks for the heads up. I just had to replace my OEM fuel cap with a different model but still probably made in China. I'll keep an eye on it even though mines garage kept.

Not saying they're all crap, just that this design had a couple flaws. The O-ring on the actual cap was not thick enough to seal 100% and the push down and twist mechanism had a lot of play and even seized up and showed signs or rust leaking out of the bottom... Don't really like the look of the OE one, doesn't really go with the track look I'm going for, so might get a more high end piece in the future

Refilled the tank with 5L of gas and Red Line's Water Remover (two caps) and fired up after a few WOT cranks! Lots of light smoke at first but soon went back to normal, guess it was the water in the engine and exhaust evaporating.
Went for a ride and filled the tank, works like a treat :kiss:
