I'm not a tuner, but I believe that the backfire (actually it's called afterfire), is BAD. It means you are running lean, i.e. too much air and not enough gas, and leads to inconstant detonation in the cylinders, which leads to pitting and excessive heat. Not to mention running lean generally means a decrease in BHP.

Sounds cool, but yeah, it's bad.

Don't get afterfire confused with exhaust burble on deceleration. Burbling is OK, and is a result of pressure differences in and outside of the exhaust. Shorty exhausts tend to burble a lot. Take what I say with a grain of salt, it's only what I've read, and experienced - again, <<< not a tuner ;).
