The bike is around 11k, and i thought it was the battery at first cause it is a couple years old, im not original owner but it is a YUASA battery.

When the bike is off, the voltage of the battery is around 12.8, when i do the volt test it draws current and is reduced to 12.3.

When i begin revving it up to 5k, the voltage slowly increases to around 12.6

Then i did the take pull negative cable test and the bike didnt die but the light and gauge flickered, they were about to turn off


I dont want to replace anything till I know what the main reason a bike is not
charging itself

What should i check for? wires? rectifier? stator?

Its very possible the battery had a bad cell take the battery off the bike and head to any auto parts store such as pep boys , discount auto , Napa and ask them to load test
the battery they usually do it for free and see if it passes or not
that would be the first step get that done and let know how it went

yeah, i'm not sure what a volt test is.

this is how you're supposed to go about a charging system test

Test battery voltage and record findings
Start the motor
Test battery Voltage at idle, low beam only and record findings.
Turn on the high beam and rev motor to 5000 RPMs while testing battery voltage record findings
turn off the motor

analyze findings. in each step, the voltage should rise by at least .5 volt per step. at 5000 RPMs with the high beam on the voltage should be below 15.5 VDC, but above idle voltage. idle voltage should be above battery voltage.

That's not good. Next, to eliminate further issues, test your stator coils for resistance between each yellow wire (BIKE OFF).

should be between .1 and 1.0 Ohms

has the bike been laid over on the left side? Do you know which generation Regulator/Rectifier you have? Do you know what i'm talking about?

i'm 70% Certain you'll need a new R/R... but just in case the voltage output is because of one of the stator windings not producing electricity... those are awful low numbers... makes me wonder.

On a fully charged battery you should have a read of 13.0 -13.2V. Battery must be at full charge.

Check the votage at the Regulator. You should have 7 wires coming out of it.
Because its a three-phase AC Stator but they come in 5 wire configuration also, so you would have 7 connecting wire.

3 wires going to the Stator (yellow) and 4 going to + (RED) and - (Green)
to the battery.
Used the two wires that are not the same color (yellow) it should be - (Green) and + (RED).
You should get a reading around 15.5 on the DCV voltmeter when rev up.
If your not getting the right reading, Test the Stator.
Set your voltmeter to ACV and test all yellow wire coming out of the Stator.
Rev the bike to 5000 RPMs and you should get a read of 80v across all 3 wires.
If you not getting the right reading your Stator is faulty.
If it the right reading then you Regulator is faulty.


Testing your charging system like Knightslugger said, Require a Good known working battery to be in place/installed. For you the get the right reading.
Think its good is not good enough, Get it tested!

My suggestion is buy a new battery and put it on. Once done start your bike and check the voltage. If its good then you had a bad cell, if not then it would be your r/r or stator and so return the battery. To test if the stator is bad it had to do something with using the diode setting on the multimeter I'll ask a friend on how to test cause I forgot.

i have the same problem, how much does a r/r or stator go for and how much would installation for something like that be?
