Hey Dot Net,

Continuing from the valve clearance thread

I started checking my valves and measured the clearances with a feeler gauge, when i used the feeler gauge, it was the most comfortable feeler thing that fit, when i used to check the clearances as in, it fit and could feel drag when feeling.

my feeler gauge has the following sizes 0.18, 0.20, 0.23, 0.25, 0.28

now when i checked the clearances, for the inlets i would start at 0.20mm feeler which didn't fit, then moved it down to 0.18 which did.

the same was done for the exhaust, started at 0.28, moved to 0.25, 0.23 then 0.20 which did fit.

now I can't remember whether i went through this process with all the checks or if i just used the 0.20 and 0.18 feeler just to check them all after.

i did a half arse of a recheck and found that cyclinders 1 and 3, rotate 180, 2 and 4 read the same, so i thought stuff it and just continued on to the next step.

I've taken off the cams now and have checked my shims which were of the following values

Existing shim sizes
inlet 1.94 1.96 1.91 1.94 1.91 1.91 1.89 1.9

exhaust 2.04 2.01 2.03 2.01 2.01 2.01 2.01 1.99

I've calculated the new shim sizes

but my question is, if i put in the new shims and say the valve clearances are out by 0.01 to 0.03mm, what will happen?

Dreamboyz - if you read this, i may have wanted to make all the readings the same =\

Nico - if you read this, the feeler gauge was brand new. to calculate my new shim sizes i used

(measured clearance-spec clearance)+old shim size to give me the new size.

If you procceed with New Shim and it's too tight, your engine will not start. You can still put in the new shim and check it again with the camshaft cover on to see if it meets spec. You'll need to take everything apart and redo it again if it isn't.

One thing that I wouldn't mess with is the engine. Do everything as close to the book as possible. Nothing is exact so if you can get it within spec, then you'll be fine.
