Hello everyone,

I am new to the forums, as you can see my post count :banger:

I searched around the forums as well as google, and I am posting here to get some opinions as to what the issue might be, here's a brief background on the bike:

It's a 2007 CBR 600, the bike was dropped once in the garage, but that was 3 years ago, it has 10K miles on it. I just bought it off my brother which he's had it in the garage sitting for 2 years.

The first thing I did was pump out all the old gas, I then put 2 gals of new premium gas, and charged the battery for about 8 hours.

Battery is in good shape, cranks very strong.

After I put the new gas, and the battery was charged the bike started right up, I left it idling for about 10 minutes, then took it for a spin. It felt good when riding and nothing seemed weird, but then as I was half a block away from home it just bogged down and died on me. I tried cranking it and nothing, I also tried push starting it and I had no luck at all.

I checked all the fuses and all the fuses are good, I hear the relay click when I turn the kill switch on and off, I've also tried starting the bike while holding the clutch, and with the kickstand up, no luck.

I have a feeling it might be the fuel pump, but I am not sure, any help would be greatly appreciated. :thumbup:

quit playing with the kill switch, you're gonna end up having problems from it if you keep using it. Like said above, I don't hear your fuel pump priming so check all your fuses and if that doesn't work, maybe your fuel pump or kill switch need to be checked

Kill switches on these bikes seem to have a problem with sticking. Lots of threads here where bike won't start and the kill switch was the culprit.

I only use the key.

so do I, but you can hear him flick the kill switch a few times in his video :crackup:

only use the key, that's what it's there for lol

trying to quit that tobacco stuff... not going so well. I have my can of dip on my desk staring in my face and screaming for me to open up and pack a lip

Once the FI and HESD light turn on you should hear a priming sound. If not it's probably the fuel pump not working for some reason. Take it easy on the starter, crank it for 3 seconds at a time. Don't want to burn it out or drain the battery. If the kill switch is sticking, the FI and HESD don't stay turned on, so the kill switch is working fine it appears. I had a sticky kill switch last month and only the neutral and oil light stayed on. However after flipping the kill switch on and off while the bike was off and leaving it on the run engine position, I turned the bike back on and slowly pressed on red button of the kill switch and about a mm into the press the HESD and FI light finally came back on and I was able to hear the pump priming.

I think he hit the Run Engine red button on/off on the right next to the throttle by mistake and he has not relies it. At the end of the video it can be seeing for an second.

turn up your idle speed adjuster. having it too low can stop the motor from starting.

You can't adjust the idle speed on an 07+. It's all ECU controlled.

The HRC Setup manual has a startup instructions. Simply turn your bike on without starting it for 5 seconds. Make sure the gauge completes it's POST and the fuel pump has primed. Then start your bike. This will ensure your ECU has the chance to adjust for barometric pressure.

This may only be relevant for the HRC ECU but it's also good practice on all motorcycles.

Also, any problem that exists when the engine is t warm is not an issue if it doesn't continue to present itself after the engine is warm to aprox 170F

So when your bike doesn't start there's a few things you want to check.

The three things required for combustion are fuel, compression and spark. All of which are easy to test.

First test spark. With your bike still together Remove your plugs and test the spark one at a time. Test spark by removing a plug and reattaching the cool to the plug. While holding the grounding wire again the frame or engine block attempt to start the bike. You will see a spark jump from the plug to the ground repeat this for each plug ensuring you have spark on all of them. If a plug fails to spark swap the spark and try again. If it still doesn't spark swap the coil with a known good coil and try again. This will help determine if your coils have gone out and to make sure you're sparking on all 4 cylinders.

Next is to check compression. Using a compression tester. Insert the tester into each spark plug hole while you have the spark plug out for the spark test. Try to start the bike with the throttle wide open. Continue cranking for 3-5 seconds to get an accurate reading. Record your data. Make sure that compression is within spec and uniform across all cylinders without too much variance

Lastly is to check fueling. Remove the air box, prop your throttle bodies open and look to see if you see fuel squirting when you try to start the bike. You can also remove one of your primary (lower) injectors and hold it into a cup and try to start the bike. Repeat for each injector. This is all assuming tat the fuel pump is working. If the pump is working but you're not getting fuel to any lower injector you will probably need to replace that line or your pump. If your upper injectors aren't misting you probably need to replace the upper hose. If only one injector isn't misting you'll need to replace that. This is all assuming your electrical is working fine.

i didn't hear the fuel pump prime, i would check that first. also no need to use your kill switch so just leave it off and use your key. also you may also want to take the kill switch apart and clean it.

Each of the steps above will help indicate where you need to troubleshoot.

If you're not getting spark across all 4 cylinders you have an electrical or ECU problem.

If compression is low in any cylinder you likely have a blown head gasket or you need piston rings. Or your valves are out of spec and you have a valve stuck open. Blown head gasket will often be a companies by a gurgling noise from your radiator she you try to start.

And fueling is pretty easy to diagnose. You're either getting gas or you aren't. You can narrow down where the issue is by removing hoses to see where gas is getting to. Remove to hose off the tank to see if the pump is actually working. Then remove it from each connector in Succession.

Fueling can also be an ECU problem. Especially if you've got an aftermarket piggyback controller.

Thanks for the replies, I was flicking the kill switch to see if the pump would prime but no luck as you can see on the video.

I decided to do some troubleshooting today and since I was getting no pump prime I switched the relays around and still no prime from the fuel pump, I ended up taking off the gas tank and checking if the plug was giving voltage to the pump as I turned on the power and it is getting power.

I figured the next step would be to check the fuel pump... Now here's where it gets weird, I jumped the pump directly with the battery it runs fine, but when I attach the pump to the housing and jump it, it doesn't work. The connectors seem perfectly fine, I just don't get it. Here are some pics that might explain the issue a little better.

It's a bit late, and I smell like fuel so I hope I'm making sense :ponder:

I never posted an update, figured I would since I got the bike back up and running. I ended up pulling off the connectors from the plug that comes from the fuel pump and cleaning them real good with this electrical cleaner spray I found at Walmart. After it everything dried up I assembled the fuel pump back up, jumped it to test and it worked perfectly fine. I assembled the bike back together and she's running strong now :)

Now I have to deal with 4 tickets I got this weekend... Bummer :gun1:
