Should you take your bike in for the 600 mile service?

  • YES! It takes a well trained mechanic to do the job

So much said about 600 mile services. Bring it to a shop or do it yourself? I also want to know if any of you who did it yourself ever had any bolts or what-not, cause any problem for you that you wished would have been taken care of by taking it to a shop? I also need to know that when i tell my freind to just change the oil and filter that i wont get it later when he says that his bike is about to fall apart.

if you can change the oil, you can do your own 600 mi. that is basicly all the shops do. sure, they may LOOK at it, but they don't do much. my friends triple clam was commin appart a week after service. of course, if you know a mechanic, or have friends in a shop that won't screw you over, don't over look them.

personaly, i don't trust anyone other than myself with my bike. it could be a matter of life and death when it comes to detail and i don't want someone else's impatience or ignorance to cause me to crash or cost my my life!!!

The only problem I had doing it myself was that Honda over tightened the filter to the to block, so it was a bit of a struggle. If you do it yourself make sure to put a little bit of oil on the seal of the new filter with your finger. It will help make it easier to take off at the next change.

I said the hell with it and did my own '600 mile service'. yeah the oil filter was a complete bizatch to remove. Weird it sits right behind the headers where it can soak up mega-heat.

I did mine at 600 miles, and then heard that if you don't have a dealer do it, it voids the warranty (is this true?); so I had them do it 200 miles later. Won't make that mistake again - 95 bucks for an oil change and take five mins to look at all the parts that are functioning correctly anyways!

I did my 600 mile oil change, and it only took me an hour and i had to run to walmart in the middle of it to get filter pliers because it was such a pain in the butt to get the filter off, and then took the pliers back HAHAHA. In the manual it says you have to remove the overflow bottle, and that is not true, i just un did the bolt and moved it to the side. As long as you got your tool kit or your own tools, then you are good to go. :lol2:

Hey pick up this months copy of motor cyclest. Has a great article on warrentys. Basically as long as you keep reciepts of all goods (oil, oil filter, air filters and so on )and keeep a log showing dates and mileage then as long as you or a friend is competent enough to do the job you can do it and it does not void your warrenty. Another thing it brings up is that modifications do not void your warrenty unless specifficly stated. If you take your bike in for warrenty work and they say you voided it by addings mods. thats a load of bs. They have to prove that that mod caused the problem. This is a Federal law and you have way more rights then you think. GO get this months edition and read that article.
