I am at 600miles and need to take my bike in for service. They want to charge me $173. Its $138 and $35 for parts. Does this sound right? Or is that waay too high. I am in the bay area and I purchased the bike from Roseville Cycle, and thats also who I got that quote.

whats all involved in thtis service anyway, i mean, why does the dealer insist on telling people to bring it back. Isnt it just an oil change, and chain adjustment, and a quick inspection.
Im not doing that BS when i get my 07. im sorry. I know way too many people that just changed the oil and theyre bikes were fine, 10s of 1000s of miles later.

That price is way too high. The first service should be around $100.

Looking at my receipt from the dealer here in So. Cal.:

oil filter: 13.49
washer: .95
chain lub: 5.49
oil: 11.80

600 service 80.00

After tax total: $116.08

$5.49 for chain a chain lube????? or is that the price you paid for a can of chain lube??

if they charged you $5.49 just to lube your chain you might as well let them lube your azz next time cause your getting a serious fuking!

No, that is not exaclty what it said on the receipt, I shortened it. It was for contact cleaner and lube. Big damn deal, they charge me $5.49 for cleaner and lube...oh no I'm gonna go broke! LOL I've seen people spanked much worse on the 600mi service. And...I got the service free actually. After making a deal on the bike, I asked how much the first service is. Then I asked for them to take off that amount from the price of the bike so the first service is free. Request was granted. Don't worry, your boy here knows how to make deals son. =-)

I took mine in for a service but my friend works at the dealer so I got a hook up. I don't think it's that hard just change your oil and make sure your bike is running fine, nothing too hard that you can't do yourself.

It isn't stupid to get the first service done at the dealer. If there are any defects, you are most likely to catch them at that first service. Many new bike owners can do the oil service successfully, but do not know how to check the bike over for errors...or listen to the motor and know if something just isn't right. Stupid is someone who assumes everyone who buys a bike knows how to change the oil and check over the bike the same as a trained Honda mechanic does. I agree...change the oil yourself after the first service. But..if there are issues you are unsure of, take it back to the dealer...that is where they honor warranty issues! =-P

Do some reading and searching on this board, mostly in the maintenance section regarding what all you can do for the first service. Most dealers are going to change your oil and filter, clean the chain, adjust it if necessary, lube it, and check for any obvious defects like loose bolts, clutch cable slack, and obvious fluid leaks. Sometimes you get good shops that really work the bike over retorqueing each bolt, taking mesurments, etc. etc. and then fill it full of gas for you when they are done!

find out precisely what they are going to do. if they aren't going to give the bike a full blown verification, pocket your wallet and do them yourself. any shmuck can do the 1st service. torque specs are listed on this site, and you can get yourself a torque wrench for under $60 at sears (the click kind, not the dial, those suck).

Hmmm ok, ya I'll call them again on monday and see what exactly they do. My bike has pink marks on most of the bolts so they can see if they turned at all. And when I bought the bike, my salesman told me that they check all the bearings, and go over the whole bike. And when I got the bike, I only got a 1/4 tank of gas, so I don't think they will fill it up. But I will post again when I find out exactly what they do.

Thanks guys!

I called them, and they said that they do everything that the owners manual specifys for the first service, and they have their own 20point inspection that insists of basic checks, clutch adjustments, ect... They said it takes about 2 hours, and I asked them why most shops only charge 80 for first service, and they said they don't know, maybe its the shop rates?

We have some of the highest shop rates in the country in Los Angeles and you saw what I paid. I watched my service being done and it took almost exactly 2 hrs. No, the reason that is costs so much at your dealer is because they rip people off and enjoy doing so because they can! I'd call a different dealer near you and ask for a quote for the same service. There is no real benefit to bringing it back for service to the same dealer you bought it from.

That is especially not smart on a first year model change bike...unless you are truely 100% capable of diagnosing every minor and major problem or defect early on. I don't know...this new bike has a completely different engine. I'm not throwing down all the money for a new bike and then skimp out on a $100 dollar service that could catch something warranty worthy. They are more likely to find a defect at that 600 mile service than at any other service. How do you think they work out the kinks with new models?? It takes smart people like you to buy the first year and bring it back with "the issues". LOL Have you seen the 2007 CBR 600RR in person yet? I have, and I will leave it at that. =-P

Its a Honda, yes but put togeather by regular people. Ever had a bad day?

On another note, on this thread's topic.........

The dealer is supposed to check syeering head bearings, not all your bearings. And $170 is way too much. Shouldn't be more than $80 + parts. Honda flat rate is .9 of an hour for the labor. Todesengel find a better shop.
