okay this may seem like a newb question, but i have never really been into it until now..so here goes.

so there is:

ama supersport
ama superbike?
ama superstock
formula extreme
motogp
any more?

what cc bikes do they use in each of those. i always thought supersport was 600 and superbike/superstock was 1l. but what about the others. i'm assuming fx is 1l cause the the bostrom bros. where in the standings???

also i posted about my accident a few days ago and my road rash and everything has settled down a bit so i'm going to strip the bad plastics off and take some pics hopefully tommorrow night so be on the look out.
thanx.

check out the site below. . the first link is AMA's home site and shows standings, teams, riders, etc. the second link can also be found from AMA's homesite labeled "Superbike 101". it shows cc's rules, etc. . the third link shows motogp home page and shows riders, standings, etc. hope that helps.

motogp is formula 1 version of motorcycles. world superbike also a world event.. this year looks like a ducati race events.

ama supersport lightly modified 600cc (pipe, couple other little things I believe)
ama superbike? 1000cc bikes, more modifications allowed than superstock
ama superstock 1000cc bikes, similar to supersport with light mods
formula extreme 600cc superbikes, most modified 600cc bikes in ama
motogp Not part of AMA. These are the prototype bikes (RC211V, M1 etc..) big money, best riders. Basically the formula 1 of motorcycles.

just to add to what others have already said.

ama supersport - production based 600 fours's, 750 twins.
modifications are quite open, similar to superbike. but trick bits powershifters, i beleive are not allowed. with slicks.

ama superbike - production based 750 fours's, overbored to 800 fours's, 1000cc twins, and 900ish 3 cylinders...
large number of modifications, limited to 50% by volume original frame, etc. tires are pirelli spec slicks

ama superstock - production based supersport, limited to pipe, fork internals. rear suspension and engine for the most part must be stock, wheels, and dot tires.

formula extreme - production based, almost unlimited modifications. used to be 1000cc, now down to 600cc, since it was almost superbikes before. no point in running two similar series.

motogp - not ama. primier class prototype racing. 990cc limit for 4-strokes, with weight restrictions for engine configuration. fuel tank limited to 24L, soon to be 22L.
330lbs for 5cyl
300lbs for 4cyl
280lbs for 3 or less
and 350 or something, for any # of cylinder.
used to run 500cc 2-strokes.
also includes a 250 and 125cc class.
like someone said, the f1 of bikes.

world classes of production is similar to the ama ones.
superbike, supersport, superstock

the american motorcycle association (ama) is the governing body for many races held in the u.s. info. about ama classes can be found at: http://www.ussuperbike.com/article.php?UID=RMZ2AVjeFboIejdO4hsmAmBUhRuELU&sc=1122&aid=2663

the superbike (sbk) world championship is a european racing league and info. can be found at http://www.worldsbk.com/ i think this league has become kind of boring because through a strange sequence of events the league became predominantly ducati.

there is also a british superbike league i believe.

moto grand prix (moto gp) is the crown jewel of motorcycle racing and is analogous to formula car racing. this is where manufacturers showcase their best technology and the best riders from around the world like rossi and gibernau race. info. about the riders and tracks can be found at http://www.motogp.com/ and an overview of the bikes can be found at http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/Article_Page.aspx?ArticleID=659&Page=1

prior to the 2002 racing season the motogp bikes were 500cc two strokes. now they're 990cc four strokes. 2002 was a strange season because the two strokes and four strokes raced together since some manufacturers couldn't develop a four stroke machine in time for the 2002 season.

many consider honda's motogp machine, the rc211v, to be the best motorcycle ever created. the 600rr has a lot of technology found on the rc211v which explains why it's such a bad-ass bike.
