I have given up on DSL or Cable coming to my neck of the woods. It's just too rural and too low income thanx to NY's socialism resulting in rediculous taxation policies.

How much better than dial-up is the satelite service? I've heard upload time sucks but download time isn't too bad.

DirecPC, DirecTV's version claims to not need a phoneline, Is that true, I currently Have DirecTV and figured I'd stick with them, pretty strong satelite reception.

Do trees in the line of site path kill the data out signal?

I'm friggin clueless on the satelite broadband, any info would be helpful.

Thanx

damn, DirecPC is still alive?? i used to sell that stuff at Circuit City a few years back. upload speeds are dialup at best, plus there's a 1-2 second delay in retrieving info like ya satellite tv. yes, directv's uses a microwave transmitter to upload, so no phoneline needed. from what i remember on pricing, it was $70+/mo and your DL speed was like 256k or so. been 2+ years since i sold it, so it may have gotten better. and yes trees will kill your signal if you don't have a good line of sight, it uses a different satellite than the TV signals.

Only problem with Satelite is the Ping time or latency is high so gaming is out of the question but everything else from whaqt understand is good.

Yep the latency is about 500ms or 1/2 a sec which is pretty substantial for on-line games. However, you might be able to get away with it with things like WOW or EQ2. FPSs are pretty much out of the question though.
