Well next year im gonna be a senior. ever since i was a freshman i wanted to go to UTI and work on cars. lately, ive been thinking about going to MMI (motorcycle mechanics institute) instead. has anyone here gone through their program? did you like it?

My only concern is that i havent worked on a bike, ever. I have a couple years of experience on cars. and i live in oceanside, CA. i was gonna go to UTI up in rancho cucamonga, but if i got to MMI, i'd be going in phoenix, az.

i haven't actually gone to either, however, i was accepted at uti and had it all paid for including a scholarship which included a few thousand dollars of snapon tools. after further thought, i decided to go to the local tech and got my automotive technology degree there. i have since stopped working at a dealership and decided to further my education at uw. now im also thinking about the mmi thing. i have some more research to do on it, but so far it sounds like that is the place to go. let me know what you end up finding out about mmi as i am quite interested yet.

Well it has been a long painfull process for me but At first I was going to go to MMI,Orlando then I changed my mind after looking into the jobs available and money to be made. So then I was looking at WyoTech and UTI after long time of comparing the two and seing what each had to offer
I finally decided on UTI Auto/Diesel Technology ( Main Campus AZ)
reason: UTI =better school, offers more for same price, and by going to AZ you get an Assosiates Degree instead of Diploma(the way they have it set up with the state of AZ)
JOb placements and offerings are so much higher is the Auto/Diesel field then Motorcycle ( don't get me wrong theres alot of jobs and money to be made in the motorcycle world)but my dream is to own some sort of car related business down the road(Performance shop, dealership, regular garage) I been around cars/bikes all my life so I love to work on both.
Just def. make sure it is something you will love to do before you get into it and dump 22-34k for the shrt education

wow, i didnt know az could give you a degree. im definatly going there now! my mom really doesnt want me to work on cars, and when she found out i couldnt get a degree (when i was looking at rancho cucamonga) it just gave her more ammo. Ill see what she says now.

Thanks a lot.

Also these schools are designed even for people that have never picked up a tool before or even looked at under the hood of the car or anything.
They teach you everything step by step Safety first the by starting off with THIS IS A WRENCH. So as long as you are dedicated to learn and come to class you are all set.
MMI is by far the best in the states and probably the most expensive. But you can go back as many times as you want to further upgrade your learning for free because new stuff comes out everyday.
Also they have Manufacturing Programs that you can get into:
HonTech Elective (Honda)
K-TECH Specialist Elective (Kawi)
FAST Elective (Suzuki)
YamaPro (Yamaha)
not to mention their job placement is like 98% with in first month or so of you getitng out.
and they help you find a job in any area of the country
Also when u apply for a job and it states you went to MMI ( whoever is hiring you will be like oh no **** you went to MMI..you will def. be looked at first over somebody that just went to a small local place or some1 that has no schooling)I am not saying this is right nor do you get more or less education at your small local places but the name MMI is just so out there

Anyway if you have anymore questions i'll be more than glad to answer them since i already go to a branch of this school and have done every piece of research needed to be done on these schools

I am not sure if you wil get a degree in the motorcycle field cuz it's a shorter amount of time
I know that for just Auto i couldnt so for an extra couple of months and extra 4k I took Diesel along with it
But a degree is nothing you would worry about you will get a diploma and if you would like an Assosites they have set up programs with a couple of colleges in AZ that you can go to.
Also when you are employed the main thing you wanna do is work hard and impress your boss ( you wanna try to move up the ladder) Once that comes they will send you to further education because any shop would hire some1 that has worked there for a couple of years as a manager and send him/her to school over some1 with the education and has not worked for the same company or has no previous experience.

It should not be your parents deciding for you. It should be you deciding what you wanan do and it sure better be somehting you love to do or you will never be happy at work.
They should be happy enough that you want to get further education and say yes go to school and will will help you anyway we can as long as you don't flunk out.
If your parents are not too familiar with the Auto/Diesel/Motorcycles/Marine field i would do some research and show to them that these fields are huge and you can work anywhere in the world. As long as we are still here we will always need some sort of transportation.
and this is no back yard machanic type stuff.
When I walked into BMW Academy and a few of BMW Dealership Garages these places were so clean that you can pretty much eat off the floors. And these Technicians are making 28-35k start and with in few years 50K plus

I tried to convince my mom that it was a good job, and they make good money, but she wouldnt listen. I dont care, im gonna do what im gonna do, even though she wont support me.

Hmm... I really want a degree, if i have to take auto/diesel (what i was going to before) then ill do it, ill get in touch with someone there to find out more.

Thanks a lot for your help.

My Dad's friends son (I've never met him but heard the stories) went to MMI in Orlando. I was told he went through the Yamaha factory training program and did really well. Now he has graduated from the school and is working in a non motorcycle field, allegedly their job placement program is not all that it's cracked up to be. If you plan on going back to your hometown after graduation, I would go around to the dealers or other shops you would like to work at and see what kind of demands there are for certified mechanics in your area. Remember when you are talking to the people at MMI they are just like any other salesmen, they'll tell you anything to get you to sign the dotted line. They might guarantee to find you a job after graduation but it might be in Alaska or something. I personally know another guy that went to the Nashville Auto Diesel College and went through the same type of thing, now he is working at a low paying shop (he found the job himself) after NADC couldn't provide him with any better options.

Black05rr i have not heard of storiesd like that yet
but i am not speaking good of them cuz i go to UTI and cuz of what their so caled salespeople have said..
I know many people that have graduated from the school and have gotten placed in jobs right away and love it
You are able to become a Master technician with in 2-3years and no master technician makes under 40k at any dealership garage
People that don't go to school work at backyard shops and most of them are getting 10-15dollars
Idk what the deal with your friend is but if they went to this school and searched hard enough they would not be wokring for low pay at a grease monkey garage
the Transportation Work Field is probably the larges in the world.
Now if you lived in a small town of 10k people and you wanna move back there well then you will have a harder time finding any job and making the money you should be.

Granted it was a smaller town, about 80,000 population and they both moved back there when they were done. That is the reasoning I told him to check into local demand if he plans on moving back to where he's at, just trying to give him both sides of the story.
