Guys, i have about 18,500 miles. My bike is mainly a weekend rider with a few track days in between. Basically, I do my oil change every 3,500 miles and just changed my chain, sprockets, and air filter. When did you guys do your valves and did they find anything major wrong?? I know that job will cost me $$ so just wanna see what i'm in for.

The interval to check valve clearances is 16k miles. Note that this is a check. You may not actually need adjustment. I had an F3 with 78k miles and it never needed adjustment. My buddies F3 is at 85k+ and he has never needed adjustment. I just checked my 600RR at 16k and it didn't need adjustment.

Dealers will charge $400+ to check valves. I've seen independent shops charge as little as $250. I got sick of paying that much for shops to tell me I needed no adjustment that I now do it myself:

oh im not doubting you, its juts insane that it made it so far without it, and dealers make it sound like your bike will fall apart if u dont. I dont think ill have that kind of luck tho, i used to live at the redline.

mmm, well there u go, who know. my 03 made it pulling hard to 21k without that thing, escept for the occasional missing spark plug which was fixed, it was flawless.
I guess its a Honda thing.

thanks a bunch. the sad thing is if you take it to a dealer, you really have no idea if they truly checked the valves or not right?? Unless they test it right in front of you? otherwise they could just say everything is cool when it really isn't.

true, true.

this is where it helps to develop a relationship with a shop and build some confidence.

Whenever I was told it was in spec, the first thing I'd do as what the measurements were. Usually, they can readily show me a worksheet (or piece of paper) where the measurements were jotted down.

snikwads suggestions are helpful too. What I would do is visit the shop in mid-job to see that my bike is actually in pieces.

Thats a good idea, even if they tossed it, it couldnt be too deep in the pile, if u picked up your bike the same day.
they should keep that trash to show u tho, just pretend u want it for your service records. If they cant show u. hmmm, mad face mad face.

i will do my own maintenece when the time comes, checking & adjusting the valves is not a problem but should the engine need thicker shims i'm toast as i have to order them if they're out of the size i need.
