Last night as I was riding around, my headlights just shut off. I was a little puzzled because my meter, 3rd eye, brake/blinker lights were still working. So I stopped, shut off my bike to see if it would start. Negative, so after calling a friend to drive me home, I ran with it to start it up.

Now, my question is, Doesn't the stator create enough power to run the headlights? Could my stator be bad, or did I just drain my battery(I've been riding nights a little more than usual lately)? Also, I'd like to mention that I haven't put it on my battery tender yet since it's a new battery, and I have also not checked any fuses or anything.

I already know all of the things to check, I was just wondering what you guys thought.

When you pressed the starter button, did the starter attempt to spin any?

No, it acted dead as if the bike had - battery. But my gauges and 3rd eye and everything still worked as if it had full charge. Throws me off a little.

To me, it sounds like a problem with the headlight circuit, possibly at the starter switch. Are the headlights and starter still not working?

Check the headlight fuse to see if it's blown. I'm thinking it is.
If it is, check the headlight connections and starter switch. There may be a short somewhere along that circuit.

Yea, I had planned to check it all out when I get home later, I have to put in a new airbox etc, so it won't be a big deal. But it puzzled me a little with the way the headlights and starter just died out of no where. It wasn't a gradual death, it just went out, and that's the only thing that made me think it might not be the battery.

The headlights and starter are connected. If the Headlight 20A fuse blows, the starter circuit also dies.

The only problem is that if that's the problem, I'd have to figure out what blew it.

I have all of the necessary tools, and procedural knowledge/service manual to complete the task. It's just the time to do it which is a major headache. Working every day of the week is taxing, and with my luck, it would be the last option that would be the problem.

I had this same thing happen on my 07 earlier this summer. Charge your battery and see if it starts. My stator/regulator went bad, there was enough power in the battery to turn the lights/guages on, but not enough to start the bike. I put it on the battery tender for a night and it started right up the next day.
