Out with buddies riding in Vermont yesterday and my 03 with 3,400 miles. Cranking along @ about a 100 with the revs way up and motor just dies.
Checked all the fuzes got all my lights - the bike turns over but doesn't start....
Had to call a friend to come pick me up from an hour and half away. Anyone have any ideas... loose wire.... sensor... (its got gas- plenty of it)
I'm the only honda in the pack... and i broke down... whats up with that!!!

Is there a PCIII installed? Usually this is the cause. The older PC units had interference issues with the 600RR. If you do have one, get the serial number off the unit and call dynojet. They'll replace it for free.

Has the bike been in storage?

Nope ... all stock besides the ART slip on pipe

My local dealer here is useless... they have a bunch of 17 year old dirtbikers they call techs !!! And i don't want to bring it back there.
At this point I'm open to any ideas.

Was the bike in storage?

Have you checked you battery terminals? Fuse box?

Look for the simple things first and work your way out.

do like NewRedRider said and check the simple stuff. i had the same problem and it just turned out to be a loose cannon plug under the tank. it took me a while to take off the cover but i had to check everything before i really freaked out.

we checked the battery terminals - Fuse box - Fuses under the seat, basic stuff first. I'm not freaking out yet - Gotta be something electrical somewhere....
Keep the ideas coming guys. Can't wait to get home and start rippin this thing apart.

Ok then, make sure your BAS isn't loose and the wires are connected good. It's mounted under the front fairing between the headlights.

Another thought, crank the bike either on the rear stand or have a friend hold it. With the kickstand up, put the bike in gear but don't release the clutch. Now wiggle the kickstand and see if the kick stand sensor is tripping the bike.

Also, check your safety neutral switch wires going to the clutch and right next to your shifter (2-PIN connector G/R & G/W). My bet is it's somewhere in the safety switches. (i.e. BAS, Neutral Switch, or the Kick stand switch)

If that doesn't solve the problem start pulling the plastics off including the tank cover. You need to check the PIN connectors going to the ECU and under the left/right ram air covers. Disconnect the battery and pull the PIN connectors apart and inspect the pins.

If it cranks but does not fire up I don't think think it would be the safety switches. I don't think the bike will crank if the bike is in gear and the kick stand is down, if it did then it would be too late for the safety feature to actually work. I don't think you can put the bike into gear with the kickstand down even if you have the clutch pulled in. The only safety exception might be the BAS which I think is a fuel cutoff for when the bike tips over it will prevent excess fuel from leaking out.

I its probably fuel related, maybe the fuel pump fuse or connection. Or its spark related. If you flick the kill switch to the run position and you hear the fuel pump prime up then chances are the problem is spark related as the priming of the fuel pump tells you its getting power.

Whats up with this BAS thing! Will it just go out a wack while you cranking on the road??

Like i said - i was doing the better part of 100mph at high revs when it shut down.. No sputter... no bucking... no cutting in and out.... just went dead.

I just remembered a guy that rides with us is a Honda tech... just got in touch with him - he's got the same ideas you guys have.... by all means don't stop posting its not fixed yet!

If the BAS or the wiring is loose it will do just that. Same with the other safety switches.

beung, I'm thinking it's an intermittent problem that only happens under heavy vibration. So the bike would still crank sitting still. Also, the kickstand needs to be up. (i.e. In a riding position)

It could be fuel related but usually the RR will continue to run but just give poor performance in the higher RPM's. If you have pulled the tank up anytime recently make sure your main fuel line is in the "notched out" area of the air box. It's just a slight indention.

My gut still thinks electrical....

Had the tank off about 3 weeks /1,000 miles ago... i think we put everything together right..I was putting plugs in it - then we got smart and dropped the radiator, i( think i was better that way)- Its been running like a bear since.

Will this bike throw any codes for what might be wrong ? Or is it going to be trail -error kinda stuff...

Going to check the BAS first thing when i get home.... And start going through the list....

I'm jetting outta work at 5 - i'll check back with you guys before I leave.

jumping back to the BAS quickly... i hear the fuel pump prime up when i turn the key...

If the BAS was bad wouldn't the fuel pump not be priming up ??

Correct. Just make sure the BAS nor the wiring is loose .

However, now that we know the bike was apart 3 weeks ago odds are it was something you did then or didn't do putting it back together. Check you PIN connectors at the ECU and under the ram air covers.

redrider has some excellent points..especially with the vibrations, a good way to distinguish a fuel problem is to just turn the key on..then turn on the kill switch, if you hear the fuel pump buzz up..then it's not that, the BAS won't allow power to be sent to the fuel pump to turn on if it's not working properly, also check your fuel pump relay

EDIT: ...i didn't fully read the post, i didn't know you guys had already talked about this..sorry!
