Hi all,

Looking for some boot recommendations. Mostly do street riding and just looking for some support to avoid injury if I do need to get off. Looking mostly at the Alpinestars line as I'm an Alpinestars whore. Recommendations please? Trying to keep it under $300 if possible. I like the style of the SMX line.

ETA- I had a pair of Dainese Torque in boots. I didnt like them as they didn't feel super secure on my feet and felt like they would come off in the event of a crash.

To be honest, I just wear 8" combat boots when I ride. Lace up, mostly leather, lots of padding, and very comfortable. I have to wear them at work anyways so they work great for me.

I wear Oakley si-8 boots on the street, and feel perfectly safe.

While they may help with abrasion, they won't help if your ankle gets twisted or ran over by a car.

OP, invest in GOOD riding boots. A* is ok for the money but I think Dainese offer better ankle protection. Dainese Torques are great boots, are you sure you had the right size?

I'm pretty sure I had the right size. I bought it in person at Cyclegear trying on different sizes. Although the Dainese Torque In(mind you this was 3 or so years ago so different model from current line up) were zip up, they had a stretchy section that felt like my feet could come out with enough pull on the boot. I like the idea of an inner boot with sections over it.

Those won't be protecting your ankle from anything other than scrapes

I had the TCX - X Move boots, great boots Water proof, great protection however I bought a size too big and they didn't fit right. I now use the Alpinestars SMX-1 R Vented Boots and I absolutely love this boots, good protection, comfortable, tons of air. Hope this helps.

I wear A* SMX-1's daily. They're short boots so not as good ankle protection, but wear them at work all day too. Very comfortable.

I have the TCX X-Cube EVOs for the street.

The ankle protection is like steel rods on the sides...love em!

These days I am using the boots which I bought from the ski bum promo codes. They are too comfy and provides good ankle support.
They are the best choice to use in everyday life.

These are great boots, mine are a couple of generations behind the latest now but that's because they are still going strong. Sooooo comfortable, i can ride in them all day, walk around as long as i want to, they really are like slippers. They have an inner bootie which i think is a big part of it, i haven't crashed in them but by all accounts the protection is as good as it gets.
The only down side for me is with big calves i can't get jeans over my boots, i'm happy to have leathers or jeans inside my boots but if i want to do a fair bit of walking they're less obvious with jeans over them, i wear black and they have the white logos so i can live with that for how they do everything else so well.

Not sure on price but i've had my current pair for about 7 years now so whatever i paid i reckon i've got good value from them!

I wear Sidi Black Rains most of the time as they're pretty comfy, protective and waterproof. They are a full length touring/sport boot though.

I do also have Dainese Street Biker D-WP boots that look a bit like Converse hi-tops (but with some added protection and waterproofing) - but these are just for short low-speed trips when running errands, etc.

I have a few pairs of the SMX, 4 and 6 I believe. Depends a bit on what trousers you wear, of if you wear a race suit. Race suit the 6s will do you real nice, I like the vented models. If you wear jeans or the like the hard armor shin plate interferes with the cuffs of your trousers, meaning more suited to cuff in leathers. The SMX 4 I have had for years baggies and cargo pants will fit over top. The SMX 6 has some pretty cool D3O inserts for ankle protection. Both have toe sliders. The SMX 6 is PU construction, not leather. AlpineStars are great for wide feet. Overall both are very good in my opinion.
That's about all I know.

As mentioned by @498cm3 Alpinestars boots are for wider feet (me). I use my Alpinestars Supertech R for all types of riding. I wear them for my daily commute and for when I go to the track. I use to wear Alpinestars SMX Plus but much rather prefer the Supertech R.

I know a lot of folks dislike wearing an inner boot and outer boot but I personally don't mind that style of riding boot.
