Burned Lowers On Track Plastics

4314 Views 55 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  sincalirider
I've only had my track plastics on for two track days total and my exhaust is burning my lowers. I put some thermal tape on before the most recent track day and it burned the tape, and continued to burn my lowers. Does anyone else have problems with this? I don't remember having this problem on my stock lowers, I have optimal fairings now

I was worried about this with my Armour Bodies bodywork too... The fit has the lower actually touching the exhaust when I clip the lower to the mid/upper.

In my case, when I add the rear bolt near the kickstand, it pinches the lower just enough to get it out of the way, and so far no burning. I've run two full trackdays so far. I did have to drill that hole too, and it wasn't marked or dimpled by the manufacturer.
i've got a zip tie on that hole now (aways lose that bolt...). my fitment isn't great and the plastics are literally stretched onto the bike
Mine are burning there too, almost every CBR600RR with track fairings I have seen has a burn spot. It is right at the back of the lower where the catalytic converter on the factory header is.
What kind of thermal tape did you use? I have the same fairings as the OP and want to avoid this if possible.
More thermal tape help maybe? Is there any way around it?
Thermal tape will just reflect some of the radiant heat. Won't do much, if anything, if the pipes are actually in contact with the tape. I have optimals too with a full exhaust and haven't noticed any burning. I will pull the lowers off tonight and check since I'll be getting her ready for the track this saturday.
use shark skins
if they are those chinese knock off's you will need
a doo doo load of heat tape or they will continue to melt
Oh, and I have no heat tape anywhere on the fairings.
Maybe cloth heat wrap would work for that.

I've got hotbodies on mine with a Arrow header and I dont have any burns.
Maybe it is the cat on the factory header causing this for those of us having the issue.

Not all of us can afford to drop the money for Shark Skins, especially when companies like Optimals make a very comparable set of bodywork at 1/3 of the price.
^i used to use header wrap on the midpipe when i rode on the street, might have to get some more

Ouch:spank: didn't mean anything by that, just trying to help, I just nabed up a 600rr, gettin used to you guys, I'm normally am on a 1000rr and I use sharks. Sorry
hey boys, lets focus on what's really important, me! so am i just gonna have to do header wrap? no other options?
its possible that slims right on the stock cat issue, I just havent used these fairings
My 06 had sharkskinz and that burns my lower also. So brand wouldn't matter. It's pretty much a known problem on 03-06rr

If it's a dedicated track bike I would just wrap the headers.

My 09 is running full exhaust so i can't say about the 07+ bikes
Mine is burning too with full ti leo vince system.

i put duct work tape on it and in winter, patch it with fiberglass.
Im using a thick piece of Thermo tec competition floor mat pinched between the pipe and bodywork. Seems to be holding up. At laguna seca the ama guys had sharkskins and they were using a think piece of insulation covered with some foil. Mine touches on the left lower with akra full system and optimal fairings.
No burning on mine....But my headers aren't even close to touching the fairings.....

I have optimal fairings.

$1000 for a set of race plastics was more than I felt comfortable spending. I'd rather buy go-fast bits.

I am hoping a layer of insulation and heat tape in the belly pan will prevent the burn. :(
I have optimal racing fairings on my 07 with a yoshi slip on.

Don't have any burning after two track days. My fitment was pretty good too. Pics of your burning/fitment?
