So I'm not too familiar with motorcycle trannys:tard:, however I have gotten it really smooth to let off the throttle for half a second for the up-shift and to blip it just a hair on downshifts, and it works pretty well for me at the race track.
However I don't want to hurt my tranny.
I also don't have a slipper clutch, I wish I did.

Thanks

Clutchless shifting can be done, but to do so without putting pressure on the gears requires great precision.....so much so that professional riders use a quickshifter that interrupts the ignition for the time of the shift (usually 5 microseconds). Can you do it well enough EVERY time to not put pressure on the trannie? Is it worth doing when you could just get a quickshifter? Besides, is it [clutchless shifting] really quicker than using the clutch, you said yourself you are hesitating a half a second....I'm not going to take you literally here, so it is up to your estimation......is it REALLY quicker than using the clutch?

clutchless upshifts...every time. Once you get good at it, you'll be doing very little to no damage to the tranny.

downshifting...

blip for 1 gear down
slip for 2 or more...a little more wear on the clutch, but not really enough to harm the bike.

These bikes weren't meant to be babied. 14krpm is a perfectly normal operating engine speed. Bouncing the rev limiter on downshifts is also perfectly fine.

Im with NES.

I can upshift without the clutch, and do it when i am really on it. I put a little pressure on the lever, and just close the throttle about a quarter/half turn and the gear slides right in. It feels pretty close to seamless..

Is this hurting the tranny? I picked it up from a club racer, of course he had a lot more money to fix things that went wrong.

Is there hard evidence one way or another?

i also so clutchless upshifts but clutchless downshifts are a no-no or you'll going to grenade your tranny.

AB630 - clutchless shifts don't hurt the clutch, eventually it will hurt the transmission. I have not data on how well this works and for how long you can do it before your transmission is trashed, my opinion is simply from the observation that if it were perfectly fine to do this then why would pro teams waste the mass of a quickshifters? Could it be that this practice at the track has led to problems before the end of the race? Cause that is all it has to last to them, they will put in a new trannie before the next race.....just makes me scratch my head.

DRB8MAN: Good point on the race teams. Im going to take some time and look into this. The only thing i can think of, as far as pro teams having another reason for quick shifters, is precision. Im definitely going to take some time off of shifting like that until i can find a black and white answer.

I shift a lot quicker without the clutch.
I got it down pretty well that I'm not hopping the rear very often at all in my race weekend I just got finished with.

clutchless upshift/downshift

You can definately do clutchless downshifts using the flatshifter with out damaging your tranny it blips the throttle for you when changing down the right amount at exactly the right time here is a link to another site with a discussion of people using flatshifters www.flatshifter.com

Catach....that source also said it started a HUGE controversy with it.....there are those who believe it to be ok and then there are those that do not (which includes almost every racer except Eddie Lawson). I don't think it is right to say it is blanketly ok based on a source saying so when even they say it started a controversy.

Grazo - EXACTLY RIGHT!

Unless I'm REALLY low in the revs, I upshift without the clutch all the time.

It's not hard to perfect, and it's very smooth.

You hardly need to press on the lever at all, it seems to switch gears automatically when done properly. Your shift forks will be fine.
