Decisions Decisions - ADVICE NEEDED!!

So I’ve been looking to purchase a 600rr for quite some time now, and came across a local listing on eBay. The seller has a 2008 600rr that was in an accident sometime last year since then he has rebuilt the bike (unofficially, no paperwork of rebuild) and is looking to sell. My general concerns about the bike is that the seller currently has no paperwork, in Illinois you can get a salvage certificate for a vehicle. My other concerns would be that the frame isn’t straight and the bike/parts of the bike were stolen.

I’ve been in contact with the seller, trying to arrange a time for me to get check out the bike. But I have never owned a 60rr before, so I am not familiar with the bike, and not do I have an owner’s manual. So if there’s anyone in the Chicagoland area that wouldn’t mind helping out a fellow member, or anyone has a PDF copy of the owners manual they don’t mind sending me (I know you’re technically aren’t allowed to do so) but my email address is [email protected].

I just don’t want to get stuck with a stolen bike or a bike I can’t register. What advice would you give, other than to have the bike checked out by a mechanic, match up the VIN number and engine number. Check components of the bike, for wear from the accident. Would you even buy the bike in this situation?

Here's a link to his listing. It has pictures but not the greatest. But you can obviously see that the clutch cover is scratched/scuffed from the accident.

Hey bro,

first before you ever consider even looking at it, ask him for the VIN number, you have to make sure its not STOLEN,

get the VIN call the police dept they will only tell you yay or nay on stolen,

then call the DMV they will tell you if it will be worth the purchase, they cant tell you anything other than, lien on it? no, fees? yes, salvage? yes, they can only answer questions like that, they can not give you more info,

then pm me the VIN and ill run a report if the first to are not blazing flags,

if its a clean bike meaning not stolen or salvage we want to check the mileage to make sure its accurate, people can switch clusters on these things easy, and sell you a 30K bike when the cluster read 6K,

you dont really need a manual, that isnt going to tell you much, you need to find a friend who knows bikes or tell the guy you want to take it to a mechanic to have it looked it,

the accident could have been cosmetic or it could have been major meaning the frame tweaked and he bought a repsol kit to blind the noobs,

tell him to send you the VIN and pictures of the damage, any dents on the frame beware, any rash on the frame beware but rash can be just rash,

as him what he had to replace what happened in the accident was it a lowside or a highside, lowside just fell ans skidded, high side the bike flipped most likely,

good luck, and hopefully its a nice bike,

how much does he want for this machine

The first time I spoke with him he said he was asking 3k. But I haven't really talked to him about price because I want to see if it was worth pursuing in the first place.

Thanks for all the insight. I need some better friends. Most of my friends are on everything but Hondas. I have a friend that has an 03, but im not sure how much help that would be. And I have a friend that had a 07 that was stolen, but he really only had for about half a year.

I am going to to talk to him to see if I can get it brought to a mechanic and have it checked out.

anyone who has been around a 600rr for about a year will be good, with some mechanical know how,

I have an 03, and an 06.

if the guy is asking 3K for it, BEWARE!!!! an 08 for 3K, with that many low miles, we have entered the "TO GOOD TO BE TRUE" world, now that doesnt mean it isnt an awesome bike, but it could have also a hidden issue that he knows about and is trying to sell it FAST,

I bought my 03 for 3K, if that thing was anywhere near me Id buy it in a heartbeat after checking the hell out of it, hahah

so just grab both your friends who have had 600rrs and take them to lunch and to see a bike, look under it, try and look behind the mid fairings, those are in front, ask him to take you through the accident,

if he says previous owner, then say okay Id like to have a shop look at it, if he refuses walk away, if he is difficult in getting it checked out, or providing the VIN, make note of that, he should be willing to give all the details, of the wreck, and the VIN, and any fees or anything on it,

you can also run the VIN and license through the DMV calculator to see if anything is owed,

what would you be using it for since it doenst have any paperwork???

if its a track bike, you may run into officials at the track running VINs, and if it comes up stolen, it wont be good,

good luck bro!!!

Thats why im so skeptical about how bad his accident was. Selling the bike for such a low price. I want to be able to check all the ins and outs before buying it. If it isn't stolen, I think it'll make a good track bike.

But since he has no paperwork, and if it is salvaged, I would like to be able to get at least a certificate of savage to see if there is something he can sign over to me. If we had to wait for paper work to come in, I would try to write up a bill of sale, with an agreement that would allow me to get the bike checked out by a mechanic and have the VIN checked as well then and have it notarized or something just for legal purposes.

I don't mind having to work to get the bike. Just as long as I take the time to make sure things are all good. If he is hesitant about giving me the VIN or getting the bike checked out. Then those are probably gonna be obvious signs that there is something about the bike he doesn't want me to know.

yup, just get the VIN, first thing is to see if its stolen,

then shoot it to me to run a report, check the mileage and if it has a lien on it,

then call the DMV to see what the status of the title is, salvage or not,

yeah no paperwork is not good, could be a forfeit meaning he just stopped paying it, so it could be a clean title but has a lien on it, so the bank will want it back, when they get wind of it,
its a honda motorcycle.. unless its be severely crashed.. it will be awesome!!

good luck!!
