Associated Press 8/2/11-

In an interview with House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer this morning, the root of the Democrats' stance on the debt ceiling was revealed.

While most spoke openly of supporting greatly beneficial welfare programs or criticizing tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans, this may not have been the true driving force in the recent debate over the nation's debt. Democrats mostly agree on the importance of those factors, but perhaps more importantly, they just want to deliver what their constituents want. When asked what exactly this meant, Steny Hoyer began a story of having attended a Knicks game nearly 20 years earlier...

"I knew that my political career needed to be new and understanding, dynamic, if I wanted to make real change. I sought to be a real voice for the people of this country, and to be a voice, I needed to hear theirs..."

Hoyer decided to spend time in the public, in all walks of life, and look for telltale signs of what needed change.

"At first, it was difficult... I would approach people and ask how they felt about issues. Much of the time, they would show extreme apathy, or worse, no knowledge of what the topic was. Sometimes, I felt like giving up, but I knew that this was just a call for me to work harder for my constituents. I needed to go deeper. I needed to see them having fun! Not just walking the streets. I decided to attend a Knicks game."

Hoyer admitted he was excited about trying this new angle. He began talking right away about the pressing issues of the country. That night, he was focused on the national debt.

"Sometimes, I couldn't understand their answers! I was almost ready to give up... and then it dawned on me..."

Frustratedly, Hoyer threw up his hands and yelled "WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE WANT DONE WITH OUR NATION'S DEBT CEILING?!" Simultaneously, an amazing and crowd pleasing slam dunk occurred.

Hoyer opened his eyes to see the answer he had so strongly sought:

"Of course! They wanted it raised!" I wondered if they understood the financial and economic impacts of this... but then I saw white folks do it, too."

Hoyer was confident that everyone wanted the same thing, and thus began a career that stretches until now, and beyond. His beliefs have circulated around the party, and they've been concreted many times at such events as Cypress Hill concerts.

Love it or hate it, that's reppin' the people like a politician should.

Nice. I believe the part about not understanding what we are saying. We are speaking a different language when we say "STOP SPENDING MONEY" they don't know what that means. You are giving away everything we work so hard for and if you keep it up there will be no one left in the government. I believe states should succeed from Washington and take it on themselves. It's not FL responsibility to bail out CA if they can't figure out what they are doing wrong. Let CA decide what it wants to do with all it's money and we will take care of ourselves. States are just for examples, don't take it personal.

Ceiling is only going to give them more room to spend more. That's like me asking for a higher limit on my credit card that is already maxed out. Why have a dept ceiling if you are going to raise it anyway? Just throw all the bums out. We don't need them, we can do this ourselves. I have enough time between working and sleeping to do more work than these guys do in a month of "working"
playing golf, playing annual softball games, breaks from work "how much time off do they get 3 months" Seems like every time something needs to be done they are on a week break, stop taking breaks and work!!!!!!!!!!!! Typical procrastinators putting things off till the last minute before deciding on an extension just to delay it that much more.

there is no escaping the debt hole your politicians & their banker friends dug the USA into, raising the debt limit is only prolonging the inevitable collapse, the longer you postpone it the greater the damage becomes.

stop borrowing & spending debt based federal reserve notes & start printing debt free united states notes to pay off the debt, abolish the federal reserve & kick out all the bastards in DC.

DONT RAISE TAXES------CREATE MORE JOBS. our country can generate revenue by creating jobs. if you get an unemployed person a job they stop receiving benefits (handouts/my hard earned money) and start paying into the system. follow floridas model.... if you want benefits you have to take a drug test. (i smoke herbs everyday but ive had a job since i was 15 and every place ive been employed has nothing but good things to say about me) tri i completely agree.... why the hel* do the people i elect have any say on what people do in CA and vice versa. T. Jefferson created the constitution on the basis of state rights (localized government). another issue i have is the war on drugs.... we pay billions to stop the drug flow but all we do is inflate the cost of drugs making illegal organizations rich making it even harder to stop the drug flow. people are going to do illegal things regardless if its legal or not. tax the sh** out of drugs so if people want to do them they pay the same price but our government (the real mafia) makes money.

It's an attempt at something different. Let's raise taxes, no let's cut loop-holes, let's raise the dept ceiling, let's not raise the dept ceiling. How about a balanced budget? How about a budget period!!!!!!!!!! How do you regulate spending on something when you don't know what you are going to spend it on? This is worst business plan I have ever seen. Has anyone in Washington ever run a business, been responsible for their actions? Stand up and be a man, quite bitching and complaining about how hard your job is. No plan is going to make everyone happy so get over it. Rep,Dem party sound like my 5 and 3 year arguing over the rules of a game. Grow up.

^1 Texas has been doing very well. In my opinion, we need to make a lot of changes. What those changes are exactly, I dont think anyone knows for certain. But it's not what's happening now.

Maybe look at those states that fairing are decent during these times and take some tips from them?
TX-- Job creation
FL-- Balanced budget "Right to work state"
Washington--Doesn't make sense. The rest of the country is struggling selling houses and Washington is having trouble keeping up with all the people buying houses?

I like this quote
Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.
