***EDIT: I guess I should have mentioned this earlier. CA and Euro bikes have O2 sensors on them that help reduce emissions. If you do any type of modification i.e. exhaust + air filter requiring you to either remove your O2 sensor, or if you decide to put on a PCIII (also requiring you to remove your O2 sensor), then that is what this mod is for. It eliminates the FI light from coming up on your display after the O2 sensor has been removed. It also tricks the ECU into thinking that the air/fuel ratio is perfect, which then allows your PCIII to function appropriately. This mod is NOT intended for stock bikes, as it most likely will do nothing for you***

Dynojet is probably going to hate me for this, sorry! I'm not an electrical engineer, but google is a hell of a search engine. Do this mod at your own risk, yadda yadda, I have no FI light issues, and I routinely check the job to make sure the electrical tape isn't melting or something else bad happening. Without further adieu...

Supplies:
-1X 2006 CBR600RR (recommended :banger: but not required)
-1X pack of 330ohm resistors ($.99 at Radioshack)

-Electrical tape (not pictured)

Step 1, cut a hole in a box (just kidding).
Seriously though loosen your right fairing(s) as necessary to gain access, and disconnect the O2 sensor connectors.
The O2 sensor connection is located behind your right mid fairing. You can take it off if you feel like you need the access. I didn't. I loosened the mid fairing, as well as the lower fairing, and that gave me all the room I needed. I have chinese Repsol fairings, so your situation may vary. PLEASE NOTE that I only thought to do a DIY AFTER I had done the work. Yours will obviously NOT have electrical tape on it after you disconnect it. Picture is taken to give you a frame of reference.


Locate the plug the leads to the ECU, obviously plugging the side that goes to the exhaust will have no effect. Once you have the correct plug, trim some length off the resistors (they are VERY long when you pull them out of the packaging) and insert into the bottom pins or rather the ones that lead to the the WHITE and Black/White wires.

Plugging into the incorrect plugs will cause your bike to turn into a gixxer and rape your girlfriend. Just kidding. I honestly don't know what will happen if plug the wrong holes.. your FI light will most likely remain on, and your PCIII will still be at the mercy of your ECU.

After you get it plugged, throw a little bit of electrical tape on it. You don't need to mummify the poor bastard, just one or two strips, and call it a day.


Find somewhere to squirrel it away, and YOU SIR are done. Start up the bike to make sure the FI light doesn't come on. Merely keying to "on" won't be enough, so don't come crying back here saying your FI light is on because you turned it to on without actually starting the bike. Now go plant a tree (or at least hug one) to off-set your increased carbon dioxide footprint, you insensitive bastard.

Cali bikes have to meet certain emissions. They have said oxygen sensors on them. When you go to a slipon, or full exhaust you may not have the option of installing the o2 sensor in them. This eliminates the FI light that you get with the o2 sensor not in place.

I cannot comment on how well this technique works however.

ah instersting, so they install o2 sensers in your bikes in cali, and to buypass that is to do this mod, cool.

Yea seems like cali is like becoming a new ausi with all these regulations, its not like its a fkn car or something lol.

This is correct. My limited understanding is that this tricks the ECU into thinking that everything is reading as it should be, I.E. the air:fuel ratio is a constant 14.7:1 (which is what it wants to see), thus allowing the PCIII to work its magic. It does the same thing as the $20 part you can buy, but for a fraction of a fraction of the cost.

Yea, CA is definitely bad with emission regulations. I should have mentioned this only needs to be done if you have a PCIII OR if you have installed a full exhaust system that does not have a port for you to plug in your O2 sensor. Doing this to a bike without a PCIII will yield questionable results and I can't and won't recommend doing it.

Let's say you change the air/fuel ratio using the pcIII, but you still have the o2 sensor hook up to the ecu. Eventually, the ecu will "correct" the air/fuel ratio to factory spec, thus undoing any changes you made with the pcIII.

Item explained it perfectly. It's the opposite of what you are saying. The O2 sensor will cause the ECU to override the PCIII and it will act as if it's not even connected.

Just got home for the day, checked my handy work AGAIN, and everything is peachy. Resistor doesn't even appear to be getting warm through the electrical tape. I rode my bike for about two weeks after getting my PCIII but with the O2 sensor still connected. It seems to run smoother now that I have done this fix. There was a serious flat spot between 3k-4k RPM, now it just feels smooth the whole way through, and I haven't even really ripped on it yet.

doesnt the 04 have 2 o2 sensors?
Not that I am aware of. I have an '03 shop manual and I just looked in it: one O2 sensor. Irregardless, this mod can be done with bikes that have two O2 sensors. Just put the resistors in each connector, as each O2 sensor will have its own 4P connector. That's what the guys with cruisers do (Honda VFRs for example).

A lot of Subaru guys run this mod. Basically the O2 sensor measures oxygen content in correlation with resistance.
All you need to do is find the correct resistance that falls within specifications of the PCM calibration.

This works for the 07' as well.

I was dynoing my bike and forgot that I hadnt removed the sensor and had to run to **** smith (radio shack) to get a resistor, the guy gave it to me for free.

ahhh the good old resistor trick! i did this on the WRX, and i pass emissions every time for the past 4 years!

3 inch catless down pipe and exhaust FTW!!!!!

i have a 08 and i dont think theres any o2 sensors. we dont smog our bikes in Cali
Doesn't matter if we smog them or not. Good ol' government requires that the bikes be sold with O2 sensors (for emissions). I have an '03 shop manual and an '06 user's manual that both make reference to the sensor. If your ('your' in the general sense) bike was originally sold in or designated to be sold in california, I guarantee the bike came with O2 sensors :shakehand

I have the code but i cant find any o2 sensor or harness on my bike.. my bike is not a cali bike but i just put a new ecu on it that may have been off a cali bike.. any idea how i can get the code off? i didnt have the code before the new ecu.. i do have a full exhaust..

What year is your bike? The O2 sensor is a 4P connector that connects to the light grey 32P connector that connects into your ECM. Did you just get an ECU, and no wiring harness with it?

i dont see any o2 sensors. my bike was brand new from a cali honda dealership
i dont remember ever seeing one on any 07+ RR. i have taking my bike apart and never once seen any o2 sensors on the header or exhaust piping
