Looking through the service manual, I noticed there is a large inner bar weight on the inside that the bar end weight screws into. Is this weight necessary? doesn't look like it does much structurally, but just for vibration damping. Do you track guys remove these? Looks like they weight a couple pounds each since they are lead I think.

It's for vibration damping....aftermarket clipons are not weighted, they are completely hollow. I use vortex clipons on my racebikes.....

You can always put aftermarket bar ends that have the expanding rubber grommet.
I'm not familiar with these, but it seems like it would be a waste to remove the weights. If you're that concerned about weight reduction, you should just get clip-ons. Removing the bar weights isn't going to do much, except make your hands fatigue more quickly from vibrations.
